Minnesotas Draft Pick...

Post#1 » by Champs04bigshot » Wed Jan 16, 2008 7:40 am

Im sorry I know this has been posted before probably but I need some clarification. I read today on nbadraft.net that we get either this years second round or 2009 second round pick. Reading some of these posts in the past and other sources I thought that it was a first round pick not a second. I just want to know which one it is.

2008 second round draft pick from Minnesota:Minnesota's own 2008 2nd round pick to Detroit, provided that Minnesota shall have the option to defer the conveyance by one year if it notifies the League Office 30 days prior to the 2008 Draft. If Minnesota elects to defer, then it shall trade its own 2009 2nd round pick to Detroit [Detroit - Minnesota, 10/31/2005]

Yeah, it's definitely a 2nd rounder. What you may have read/heard somewhere is that it's like a late 1st rounder because Minny is so bad. It'll likely be top 3 in the 2nd round, even in '09.

I wish we could have gotten a first rounder out of Dupree

When are we going to start packaging some of these second rounders and move up within the first round. Our first round pick this summer is not going to be much different than a Minnesota second - and it will be a guarenteed contract as well.

What is this news though about the Beno Udrih trade or something with Minny and San Antonio... didn't they elect to give their 09 pick to San Antonio? I may be way off on the details but I remember reading reports of Minny trading away their 09 second rounder meaning they have to give their 08 to us anyways.

Well, according to this site (fairly reliable in my experience) Udrih was traded for a '08 2nd rounder that was top 57 protected.

Presumably that would mean they'll get the '09 pick...which would make the '08 one ours. I think. Maybe. Er...I dunno. :uhoh:

That certainly looks correct than, the pick will be top 57, and ours isnt protected, so we get it?

I guess it depends on the conditions under which the SA pick would be convyed. Like, could be a deal where they got the '08 pick top '57 protected otherwise it defaulted to '10 or something like that?

That's the only thing I can think of that would screw with us.

As far as I can tell the SA/MIN trade was just a salary dump for SA and cash for MIN. The pick will never go to SA. Beno was promptly waived.

^^^ Correct. That trade had maximum protection on it. As far as I know, MIN has a right to defer it till 2009 (which they most defnitely will) and then we should get an unprotected second draft pick.

Translation: It was protected as a way to circumvent the rules. SA gets no pick, Minny keeps their '08 2nd, we get Minny's 09 2nd.

Oh well. They'll still suck next year, I assume.

I never understood why a pick was necessary for that Udrih trade.
The pick doesn't have a dollar trade value, does it?

I think the pick had to be included because SA included money in the deal so Minnesota wouldn't be out any coin when they waived him and had to eat the rest of his contract.
Rip Hamilton is a stain on the Pistons franchise.
