Trade talk: The trade deadline loses a lot of appeal when your team is neither a buyer nor a seller, but we're guessing Pistons fans will get over it. Joe Dumars has done such a good job for such a long time that there really aren't any glaring holes to fill. (OK, if we must nitpick, it'd be nice to have a little more interior defense off the bench. Does that sound ungrateful?)
Stay West: In the four major trades that have been made, Shaquille O'Neal, Jason Kidd and Pau Gasol have gone to Western Conference teams, and only Mike Bibby has come to the East. That imbalance could be as important as anything for the Pistons.
Southpaw 'Sheed:Who knew Rasheed Wallace was ambidextrous? That was quite a display with his left hand during the All-Star Game. It's nice to know he's available in case Kenny Rogers gets hurt again this season.

A report on ESPN.com last night also said that the Nets, Knicks and Heat have had discussions about a three-way deal that would send Carter to the Knicks, Eddy Curry to Miami and the expiring contracts of Jason Williams and Ricky Davis to New Jersey.
A Knick source familiar with the talks said the three-way deal has been discussed for awhile, but "I don't think it works."

Coach P.J. Carlesimo is committed to shaking up the rotation and perhaps reconfiguring the starting lineup, but what will happen may hinge on if the Sonics make a trade before Thursday's deadline."[We will see] if anything happens in the next couple of days, and then we go forward from there," Carlesimo said.
While fielding calls from several teams, the Sonics are reportedly shopping disgruntled guard Delonte West, center Johan Petro, swingman Damien Wilkins and Mickael Gelabale. It's also believed veterans Kurt Thomas and Earl Watson are also drawing interest.

The Nuggets and Knicks have discussed a multi-player deal with Randolph, but it's not expected to happen. Nuggets GM Mark Warkentien drafted Randolph in 2001 (19th overall) when he ran Portland's scouting department. Linas Kleiza is an up-and-coming young big man the Knicks have interest in, but Randolph's stock is not high enough to land him. The Nuggets believe Randolph would take away too many shots from Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony.
Randolph wasn't surprised the Nuggets showed interest. The Bucks also have mulled taking on Randolph. "I know Mark very well, know his family," Randolph told The Post. "He knows I'm a good person."
The Knicks began their post-All-Star Break schedule buried at 15-37. But despite the disaster, Thomas claims he won't make a trade just to shake things up.

Heat coach Pat Riley said Tuesday the team has "discussed" using injured center Alonzo Mourning in a trade. But in the same breath, Riley said he doubts it will happen.
"I don't know if I'd ever want to lose his rights; I don't know," he said. "We've discussed that, but I doubt very much if we'd put Zo in a trade."
That revelation, which came about rather casually after Tuesday's practice, is interesting on a couple of fronts. It indicates Mourning, who sustained a season-ending knee injury Dec. 19, might be contemplating a comeback, and it shows Riley has explored a variety of options leading up to Thursday's 3 p.m. trade deadline.

With tomorrow's 3 p.m. trade deadline looming, the 76ers continue to get calls about Andre Miller. According to a league source, the Sixers have been telling teams that they are not interested in shopping the point guard.
The source also said that with such an unpredictable trading frenzy, things could change from hour to hour.
It would be a major surprise if Miller is traded, and for good reason. He is arguably having the best season of his nine-year career. Miller was averaging 16.6 points and 6.6 assists while shooting 49.3 percent heading into last night's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. "I'm not paying attention to anything" trade-related, Miller said during yesterday's shoot-around. "I just keep moving and am trying to help the team get in the playoffs."

To the everyday fan, the Pacers' easiest solution would be to blow up the current roster -- beginning with making a deal before Thursday's 3 p.m. trade deadline -- and start from scratch.
As enticing and simple as hitting the refresh button sounds, it's not that easy -- for the Pacers, at least. Team president Larry Bird can't just pick up the phone and unload his highest-salaried players because they're either hurt, have had off-the-court issues or are underperforming. He can't swap them for younger, less expensive talent because the salaries being exchanged must nearly match.
The Pacers are making and listening to calls about him -- again -- but they have yet to find a deal they like. They've recently spoken with Golden State, New Jersey and Sacramento.

Trade winds blew strongly as the NBA resumed its schedule following All-Star weekend. The league's trade deadline is Thursday afternoon, and Miller and Lowry figure prominently in speculation suggesting that the Griz could move them as a combo.
Denver and the Los Angeles Clippers, who the Griz face tonight in the Staples Center, are the teams reportedly making a serious push for Miller and Lowry's services.
However, no deals were imminent. The Griz have officially rejected at least five sane offers for Miller and they were not close to consummating anything with the 14 squads interested in Lowry, according to a team insider.

The 76ers and coach Maurice Cheeks are closing in on a contract extension. An NBA source said last night that both sides have been in negotiations regarding a new deal, one that appears imminent.
Cheeks, 51, is in the final season of a three-year contract and has received high marks among the players for keeping the team together during difficult times.
Cheeks declined to confirm or deny whether an extension was near before the game at the Target Center. "I don't comment on those matters," Cheeks said. "I am just going out there and trying to win a game."

Former Knick Kurt Thomas could be the next big man on the move in the Western Conference. Thomas, who is in his final year of his contract with Seattle, has drawn interest from several teams including Orlando, San Antonio, Cleveland and Houston.
The Magic seems to have the inside track because it has the expiring contracts that the Sonics covet.

Days after demurring when questioned on the same subject, Ben Gordon finally admitted he has considered signing the Bulls' one-year tender offer next summer and becoming an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2009.
"I definitely didn't go out of my way and say something to the organization trying to threaten them, but it is an option," Gordon said Tuesday. "Luol [Deng] has that option. Most guys in my position have that option."
Gordon, who also stated his preference to remain with the Bulls, and Deng finally returned to the practice court after missing extensive time with injuries.

Among other thoughts, Clippers owner Donald T. Sterling last month expressed a desire for his team to make a high-quality trade, bringing some light and hope into an otherwise dreary season. If that doesn't happen by Thursday's trading deadline, it won't be because of a lack of effort, said Elgin Baylor, vice president of basketball operations, and Coach Mike Dunleavy.
If there is a Clipper on the move, all signs point to it being Sam Cassell.
With Mike Bibby, Jason Kidd, Damon Stoudamire and Earl Boykins all recently finding new teams, the market for the remaining point guards is slim. Cassell, in the last season of a two-year contract that pays him $6.15 million this season, continues to draw interest from around the league as a veteran guard and playoff-tested player, but no deal was imminent for him as of Tuesday.

The math gives you a headache, but so does the Bucks' ill-fitting, chemistry-deficient roster that is just begging to be blown up. The Bucks would have to go 22-7 to finish .500; anyone expecting that should start planning for the Mike Huckabee inauguration.
If there were ever a time for the Bucks to get back into the trading business, it would be now. Except that a move of any worth seems almost as likely as the aforementioned phenomena.
For another, the Bucks don't exactly have coveted commodities. It's easy to say Harris should undo a couple of his mistakes by trading Bobby Simmons and Dan Gadzuric, but who would want to take on those salaries? The Bucks are into Simmons for $20.5 million for the next two seasons; they owe Gadzuric another $20 million over the next three.
