Who could be had with $30 million in expiring contracts?

Post#1 » by DowJones » Thu Feb 28, 2008 6:57 am

There is a discussion over on the Cleveland forum about players that could be had with a bunch of expiring contracts. What do you guys think? Cleveland has almost $30 million in expiring contracts for next year. We all know how important those are in deals, but what type of player could be had for all of those expiring contracts? Cleveland fans have tossed around the idea of trading about $27 million in expiring contracts and a few 1st round draft picks to the Bucks for Michael Redd and 2 of their really bad contracts that they have been trying to get rid of for a while. One of those contracts is Bobby Simmons...he is set to make $10 million next year alone (yikes!).

I am just curious what intelligent basketball fans have to say. Thanks.

Well you won't get Redd. Milwaukee actually thinks he is a franchice type player. He'd make a great sidekick or dynamite third option, but he just doesn't have the stuff to be the leader. I actually think he'd be great next to Lebron because Redd spread the floor and get alot of clean looks from James' penetration kickouts. Milwaukee doing that deal, and helping the Cavs in the process is something I don't see happening whatsoever.

Why not go after Mike Miller? He's still the pure shooter you want and Memphis is more willing to ship him out while they are rebuilding and looking for expirings and draft picks. You could probably get Chris Wilcox as big man insurance next year from Seattle since he'll be expiring and Joe Smith only has this year on his contract.

If you worked out a three way between Cleveland, Memphis and Seattle, you could get Miller, Crittenton and Wilcox for Wally and Damon. But expect to include 1 few 1sts and cash to sweeten it for Memphis.

Cleveland:
Chris Wilcox
Javaris Crittenton
Mike Miller

Seattle:
Damon Jones (expiring)
Rudy Gay

Memphis:
Wallys World (expiring)
2010 1st
2012 1st
Cash considerations

Memphis wouldn't move Gay, but he fit money wise.

Cleveland becomes

D. Gibson/D. West/J. Crittenton
M. Miller/S. Pavlovic
L. James/M. Miller
B. Wallace/C. Wilcox/2008 draft pick
Z. Ilgauskas/A. Varejao

Wilcox can score while Andy defends and you put your playmaker (West) on the floor when Lebron is out and put two shooters with him in Sasha.

Seattle ain't gonna just give Cleveland Wilcox. Their front office is a wee bit more savvy than Memphis.

Odds are those 1st rounders will be very late and not worth so much.

I just don't see this as feasible.

Well in my scenario, Seattle gets Rudy Gay for an expiring Chris Wilcox and Memphis gets the drafts picks and expirings.

But I agree, it's not feasible, but neither is any team giving Cleveland good players for an expiring Damon Jones, Eric Snow or Wally

huh?

If Gay could be had for that package (he can't) I'm sure Joe D could work something out.

We know Gay will not be part of that deal so consider it dead and come up with something at least slightly feasible if so inclined.

Grizzs wont move Gay. i think, they are trying to rebuild around him.

I dont see cavs getting contracts like simmons', altough they'd get redd...
Is easier the idea of getting mike, the biggest contract not expiring in the franchise-rebuild-mode, called memphis G.
