An Aussie coming to Detroit????

Post#1 » by WaydownSouth » Mon Mar 3, 2008 6:48 am

Hey guys,

I sort of hoping that you guys can kill off (or confirm) a bit of a rumor rumbling around Australia at the moment.

Sort of goes like this:

Chris Anstey (you may remember him from the Mavs and Chicago) has apparently been approached by your guys to join the team to fill a bench role during final part of the season and finals. He's playing in our Finals here (starting in a few nights time) and then will be immediately flying out to join your squad.

I thought you were looking at Ratliff or Davis.

Anyway, any word from your end would be appreciated. It's been kept pretty quite this end.

Oh, also please break the nuts and beat the hell out of the Celtics come ECF time.... Like to see a Detroit v Spurs final series..

First I've heard of this, but if anybody knows it'll be another Aussie on our board; nasty daddy. The dude is an information sponge - we're not sure he's even completely human. In fact I'm pretty sure he's not.

At the moment, sorry, no. It's being talked about down here in the ball community. Nothing on ESPN or Fox Sports, but a well known Aussie scout/coach (well known down here) Ian Stacker let a little slip last week during an interview on TV.

As soon as I can get something official either confirming or denying this I'll post it. I'm calling BS on this one at the moment, but I wanted to run it past this board to see if they have heard anything.

Anstey is a 7 footer and around 240 pounds. Went 1st round, 18th pick to Portland in 97. Spent most of his time with Chicago and the Mavs.

Before Bogut, he was the starting centre on our National team and was the 2006 MVP of our league here.

He has also spent a lot of time playing Euro ball as well. In 2003 he played for Ural Great Perm where he made the All-Star Five team, All Import Team and named the Best Centre.

In 2004 he switched to Unics Kazan who were the FIBA Euroleague Champs. He was named to the All Star Team as well.

I'd say maybe there was interest.

From reports we had Davis in for a physical... I'm guessing it didn't go to well.

They probably were exploring other options, but when Ratliff became available he was the guy.

As much as i would love to have Anstey on the team, i believe he would struggle guarding bigger centers and he tends to camp out around the arc too much.... IMO not what we need.

I'm a huge Tigers fan and i haven't heard anything at all about this, Anstey is playing in the NBL finals at the moment though. If he did decided to get another shot in the NBA, i could see him going for a stint with the Dallas but highly unlikely.

I first heard about it here http://www.hoops.com.au/sa/i.cfm/forumlist/14916/

The bloke that started the thread is pretty well connected. I'm pretty certain this is just rumors, and may of been an option before Ratliff was waived.

Best of luck against the Kings.... I hope someone smacks down Wortho..

Worthington is the biggest tool. That site looks like a fan based rumor, but i don't really see the need for him at the moment, especially when Ratliff clears waivers in a day i think where he will be signed.

I suspect your correct nasty daddy, but I thought I'd come to the guys that would know more about it if it was an option.

I'll now just wait for Steve Carfino to look like a goose on Fox and mention the rumor.

Who knows, it may of had some truth to it if we couldn't get the services of another big man, he may have been our third option after DD and Ratliff. Anstey's rebounding this season has stepped up to a whole different level this season.

Highly unlikely. As has been said, maybe we had some interest before Ratliff fell into our laps - UNLESS Ratliff has decided to sign elsewhere - we have a full roster of 15.
Rip Hamilton is a stain on the Pistons franchise.

I thought it was another Aussie going to Detroit and was asking questions.
