OT: Victorian (australia) Bush Fires

Im not sure if you guys got much news of this horrific event that occured in the state of Victoria?

So far, nearly 1,000 homes have been destroyed and 183 people are dead

Some of the fires are suspected to be deliberately lit, while others are thought to be started by careless smokers throwing their cigarette butts out of their windows

The worst hit towns were Kinglake, Strathewen & Marysville, where a majority of the fatalities occured. Marysville and Strathewen both only have 1 building left standing.

A fire hit the town where i'm from and most of my family still lives, Bendigo (me and my wife still own an investment property there too). I had my mum over visiting me and saturday night i found a heap of missed calls from my sisters and my aunty, so called back and get the news about the fires, and that more than likely our house had been burned down...and my pop had been evacuated and his house was likely going to burn (its been in our family for nearly 150 years)

So first thing sunday morning, me and my jumped in the car, and headed over there...had to go the long way over the mountains (9hrs drive compared to 5hrs) because the main hwy was closed off because of the fires. Get over there and my house and my pops had survived, but the next street over from ours, every house was gone. It looked like a warzone, very scary. Overall in my town there was 100 homes lost and 2 people killed. Just a very very scary fire. The fire front was moving at more than 250km/hr and spotting 50kms ahead of the front

Yeah i am fine, those fires are in a different state to me. What is even worse, these fires were deliberately lit. A very sad situation indeed.

I have heard about and watched some footage of firemen doing their thing to save it. It's horrible. I hope everyone is safe.

They have arrested one guy so far today for starting one of the fires. Note that there is several fires still burning out of control still, authorities think that a few more have been started by arsonist.

I am a wildland firefighter here in Oregon during the summer. My heart goes out to all that have lost their lives from the fires. It saddens me to see that people deliberately started some of these fires. I hope they put them out as soon as possible and I hope no one else gets hurt by it.
