The Jaguars have been said to be toying with the idea of letting Reggie Nelson see some action at cornerback/nickleback, which means they would need to bring in another safety or two. Well I was looking at some different prospects and Tommy Z seemed to impress me, but I would like to get someone's opinion on here about him. Would his game transfer to a cover 2 system, like the Jags? Do you think he would be a good vlaue with say a 3rd or 4th round pick?

I watched him start for the last 3 years. Hard hitter, but he's been pretty awful in coverage at times. He's smart and can read an offense well, make adjustments in-game. But I don't think he has the speed to stay with a lot of receivers.
But any guy you're taking in that spot is going to have faults, he wouldn't be a bad pickup.

He looked much better than most expected at the Senior Bowl workouts--probably the quickest safety there, and like GYBE said, he's a very good hitter and understands run support.
Watching him at ND he reminds me of Gerald Alexander, the 2nd round rookie from the Lions this past year. Alexander misses a lot of coverages and is much more a hitter than a tackler, but he wound up being a fairly effective Tampa-2 safety. He showed at ND he can blitz effectively too. I think Tommy Z isn't quite as fast or as sound with his feet, but he's worth a middle round look for a base Cover-2 team. His special teams play will play a large part in if he makes it or not.

An article on him by the Chicago Tribune. I liked the read however I think it's geared more toward informing readers how the Senior Bowl works rather than about him as a prospect but it's worth the read.
