Seems to me that Bill likes his freakish, havoc inducing OLBs. I also think that, while I feel Chris Long is probably the best player in the draft, he's somewhat wasted as a DE in a 3-4. In terms of impact on the field, I can't see him having more than a Demarcus Ware type OLB.

If I ran a 4-3 base, I'd be all over Long. Great at the point of attack and will probably get you double digit sacks, a lot like a more athletic Aaron Kampman. But in a 3-4?

I think, when all is said and done, Ryan will go #1. But I'd strongly consider Vernon there.

When you think about it, he has a lot in common with Mario Williams. I think Williams was mostly thought to be in the 5-10 range a couple of months before the draft, then moved into the top 5, then the top 3, and then suddenly he was at the top. Like Williams, Gholston didn't always dominate in college, but has amazing physical attributes. It doesn't sound like too much of a stretch.

I think Parcells will heavily consider Gholston. That guy will be a monster in the 3-4.

im not gonna lie i thought the wording was weird when i originally read it and thought about not posting it b/c of this type of thing happening. hell i sitll think the wording looks weird

Honestly I couldn't tell you what the Dolphins are going to do--I'm not sure Parcells has even decided which options he wants to consider yet. They are playing things very close to the vest. One of their beat writers and I correspond occasionally and the last time I talked to him (in Indy) he said none of them could do more than guess.

OSU's pro day is this weekend and I will be in attendance. Hopefully I can glean something there on Gholston's draft future. I do know the Rams are quite high on him and that Gholston himself would prefer to stay in a 4-3 with his hand down.

When is the last time a hybrid DE/LB has gone first, if ever?

It would be less surprising if he were going to be used as a DE, because it's not uncommon, but it's weird to think of a 3-4 LB going 1....

I think he should definitely be considered though.

20 years ago - 1988, Aundray Bruce.
It nearly happened the year before that in 1987 (Cornelius Bennett with the #2 pick), the year after that in 1989 (Derrick Thomas #4), and 1990 (Keith McCants #4).

That was at the apex of the LT era, so it's understandable. But with a new generation of OLBs like Merriman and Ware starting to dominate, maybe those days are making a comeback.

Chris Long is going #1 no way Gholston goes over Long.

Here's something else to get worked up about...Gholston posted a 4.58 in the 40 and a 42" vertical during pro day. That's mind boggling for a 6'4" near 270lb guy.

As a point of reference WR's Limas Sweed has a 4.52 40, WR Malcom Kelly has a 4.55 40, WR Mario Manningham a 4.60 40. And these are 3 of the top 6 WR's in the draft.

I think it's safe to say he's being considered at #1.

Odds are it's either him or Long, right?

I think in the end Long prices himself out because he knows he'll go #2 if Miami doesn't take him. He doesn't have a reason to take a Miami-friendly deal. That'll open the door to Gholston being the top pick in the draft.
