Official Early Entrants Discussion Thread

This for every underclassman who declares, and where they stack up in the draft/NFL.

Early word out of Oregon is that CBs Jairus Byrd and Walter Thurmond III will test the waters; both will likely receive grades somewhere around the 3rd-4th rounds and will probably return for their senior seasons.

As much as I dislike the Ducks, I would kill for Chung on the Cowboys. Maybe even throw in the Third.

The next week/10 days is when a lot of underclassmen make their intentions known. IIRC they have until sometime in mid-January to declare. I know one, perhaps two, people on the advisory committee and I'll try to keep y'all updated on any tidbits.

Bit of a shocker here: Terrence Cody (Alabama DT) is not expected to declare for the NFL draft. Outside of conditioning his body he has absolutely nothing left to prove at the college level, which is still kind of remarkable for a JC player.

It looks like Vontae Davis will declare for the draft. Top 15 pick IMO.

This shocked the crap out of me, so I did some research. The skinny, or rather, the fat...

Cody had people talk to NFL people about his prospects, and nearly everyone told him the same two things:
1. Get below 350 pounds and prove you can stay there. He's pushing 390 right now.
2. At best, he was a mid-1st round pick and probably was looking at being taken in the 25-40 range. If he goes back to school and proves he's no fluke and has durability, he'll be no worse than the #3 pick in 2010. Even with a rookie wage scale, that's a significant jump.

I don't believe he would have fallen below wherever San Diego picked (or Detroit's Dallas pick), but everything I heard is that people were extremely concerned about his weight and conditioning, and his dedication to both football and his body. Another year at Bama should answer those questions.

And Vontae Davis has a very good chance to be a top 10 pick. Cleveland LOVES him.

They want him to lose another 40 pounds? Christ. How's he going to do that in a year?

I hear Davis might have to shift over to safety.

Running, weight training and not eating your ass off with crappy food and he could lose 40 lbs by June. For an athlete that's supposed to be in the the gym five days a week that shouldn't be all that tough.

Big day for declarations:

Captain Munnerlyn and Eric Norwood (though I don't think Munnerlyn's worth more than a fifth-rounder)

Shonn Greene

Josh Freeman (watch this kid closely; great arm, great size, but is he an NFL quarterback?)

Freeman coming out was a little bit of a shocker. I was for certain he would stay at Kansas St. for one more year. He could be a 1st day pick.

Kenny Britt adds his name to help bolster a pretty bad WR class. Tall, talented, productive...he's already a 3rd-rounder IMO; with a good combine he could go in the 1st.

Why would he have to shift to safety? If he does, would he still be worth a top 10 pick?

Eben Britton (LT, Arizona) has declared for the NFL draft. Your favorite team will fall in love with him and draft him between 20 and 40.

He's going to make a heck of an NFL right tackle. And he looks a great deal like Brazilian beach volleyball god Ricardo, only blond. I think you're dead on with the range.

Good. He was the third best RB for Wisconsin this year. More playing time for Brown and Clay.

Crabtree declared today. What's the farthest you think he could slip in the draft?

10 to SF in my opinion, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him fall further.

Return to NFL Draft
