SI: (Way early) 2010 NFL Mock Draft

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Wed Apr 29, 2009 6:12 am

1. St. Louis Rams (trade with Lions on draft day)
*Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

Lions will have the worst record, but can't afford another No. 1 overall. Teams will want to trade up for this QB, unlike the lack of interest in Matt Stafford. The only danger is critics will have a year to pick apart Bradford, who could have been No. 1 this year.

2. Oakland Raiders
*Eric Berry, SS, Tennessee

Will the new Raiders coach be able to talk Al Davis out of workout wonder Taylor Mays? This is very high for a safety, but Berry is special.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
*Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma

Tampa Bay's defense will really need help after its first full Monte Kiffin-less season.

4. Detroit Lions (trade with Rams on draft day)
Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State

They'll do anything to protect their investment in Matthew Stafford.

5. San Francisco 49ers
Taylor Mays, S, USC

Might as well cement all the comparisons to Ronnie Lott.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars
Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

The disruptive Suh will help bring some bite back to this defense.

7. Cleveland Browns
Mark Herzlich, LB, Boston College

Or perhaps Sergio Kindle, who is slotted at No. 14.

8. New York Jets (via draft day trade with Chiefs)
*Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State

Assuming the Jets don't sign Plaxico Burress, new quarterback Mark Sanchez will need more help.

9. Cincinnati Bengals
*Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois

How much longer can an unhappy Chad Johnson work in Cincy?

10. Green Bay Packers
Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma

The Packers need to make that big investment in Aaron Rodgers pay off.

I've had at least 10 emails asking me to make on for next year already. Crazy!

Honestly I'm forumlating a predicted draft order now, then I'll move onto the players and fits. It'll be up in a week or so. The way-too-early top 5:

1. Kansas City Chiefs - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma : The Matt Cassel magic blows up miserably, and suddenly hot-seated Scott Pioli has to get a real franchise QB.

2. New York Jets - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State : Mark Sanchez needs targets, and Bryant stands head and shoulders above the rest of the class right now.

3. Detroit Lions - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma : 4-12 never looked so good!

4. Tampa Bay Bucs - Taylor Mays, S, USC : they simply cannot tolerate having the worst defense in the league again.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars - Tim Tebow, QB, Florida : the new coach will want a new franchise QB, and Tebow is a unique talent.

I approve solely on the basis of the Jets falling that far.

And does anybody else loathe the Goodell prime-time draft idea that Perloff mentioned? Yes, let's break up the early rounds of the draft between a popular primetime TV viewing night and a night when most people don't even watch TV because they make social plans instead. Most of the people who really want to watch the draft already make the time to do it during the weekend. At least when the NBA Draft does this they fit everything into one weeknight and have it during the summer when there's little to no primetime TV.

I agree man, it's draft weekend. Thursday or Friday night just isn't as good. The only way I'd og for it is if the 1st round is Friday night, Rounds 2 and 3 on Sat. and add two more rounds on Sunday so 4-9 complete the weekend.

I also think the draft should be moved to either Vegas or the locale of the team with the #1 overall pick. Time for someone besides the AFC and NFC Easts to have fans en masse.

ill take the jets picking second overall

My hunch tells me Tebow's draft stock is on the shoulders on what impact Pat White has this year

I don't know if MN is going to be bad enough to land Bradford. I sure hope Denver is bad enough for Seattle to land Eric Berry though.

I am pretty sure we will not be bad enough. I am hoping he either slips, or we move up.

Is Bryant that much better than Benn right now?

4 of the top 7 picks from oklahoma, 9 of the top 10 from the big 12. if that's going to be even remotely true, then the big 12 will be an awesome conference to watch this year.

Nooo not you too. Unless Tim shows that he can be an effective player as a drop back QB, he's not worth being drafted in the first round, much less top 5 of an NFL draft. And ouch, but I can't imagine the Jags being worse than they were least year after rebuilding the offensive line.

I love when sites do this.

Not even being sarcastic, they're fun to read.

I don't know where I saw it, but Mark Herzlich from BC. A top 10 projected pick according to one site. BC really throwing out some top 10 picks huh?

Hm, seems like the league is already doubting the 49ers...I don't think they will go 12-4, but 9-7 isn't completely impossible. They should be picking in the 10-15 range next year, IMO.

I am SOO excited for next year's college season/nfl draft. Eric Berry and Taylor Mays in the same draft!? are you kidding me? Safety is quickly becoming the 'glory' position of football- the position everyone wants to play and where all the best athletes are being put. And these guys that mold.

Think about the recent drafts and the # of elite safety prospects in the last decade of drafts.
'00- 0
'01- 0
'02- 1 (Roy Williams)
'03- 0
'04- 1 (Sean Taylor)
'05- 0
'06- 0
'07- 1 (Laron Landry)
'08- 0
'09-0
'10- 2 (Berry, Mays)

And in my early opinion, Berry and Mays both are better than Landry and Roy Williams. It is very rare for us to have 1 elite safety in a draft, nevermind 2.

Right now, i have to give the edge to Berry. He is a much better all around player than Mays. Right now, Mays can Hit you and run very fast in a straight line. Running a 4.3 is nice, but acceleration, change of direction, and fluidity in the hips are more important for a safety. To me, Berry looks like a young Ed Reed. It will be very exciting to examine and compare these 2 in the next year.
