Mock Draft 4.0

This is after a quick edit because I mistakenly forgot to paste Dezmon Briscoe back and cut my duplicate Best out. If any of y'all were among the throngs that emailed me about it, thanks 8-)

To preempt some common questions:
--this one has a very defensive feel to it, and that hit the QBs and RBs hard. DO I really think McCoy and Tebow fall to the 3rd? Probably not, consider this a worst-case scenario for them.

--if you think New England is keeping all those 2nd rounders you're in for a shocking draft weekend. My early guess is they're looking up, not down, and I know one of their scouts is madly in love with Eric Berry. That's a very premature e-speculation, just planting the seed...

--hardest players to slot: Jahvid Best, Toby Gerhart, and Brandon LaFell. I had all three of those guys in the 30s and also in the 80s.

Jeff,
Any reason to have Trent Williams that high. He's a heck of RT prospect but has really really struggled this year at Left Tackle. Can he still go that high?

And also your take on reports that Jake Locker didnt receive a first round grade from the NFL advisory committee? This is kind of a shocker as it seemed every scout was in love with him.

No Golden Tate? I think he's going to be an excellent slot reciever at the next level.

No Hughes in the top three rounds?

Browns actually hold the 3rd pick in the draft, as of right now.

Yes no more Tebow in the first round! But Dunlap....ugh another Gator DE...although he does seem to be more explosive than Harvey was coming out of college.

Well I'd be a very upset fan if the Pats went with many of those picks. But of course as you said it's highly doubtful the Pats pick at those spots anyways.

Tackles always get overdrafted, esp. ones from prominent programs. He does have some Andrew Whitworth to him though and that dude has become a very good LT.

As for Locker, the only thing I can think of is that he only did it for one year. He was a 48% passer IIRC and I know some teams want to see him do it again. I haven't heard what you said from anyone who would know though.

I don't see him in the top 50 picks at all. He's an undersized 3-4 OLB with one real attribute--he rushes from a 9-technique (outside the TE spot) extremely well. He might workout his way up but you don't want your team to be the one that gets sucked in.

I have a hard time slotting him too. I can see him near the top of the 2nd if teams start to get nervous about wideouts. I can also see him sliding because he's redundant with Gilyard and Jacoby Ford and some others, not as fast as any of them, and he doesn't run back kicks like almost every slot-specialist does these days. He'll be in the next version, which I'm starting as soon as the MNF game is over and draft slots are more set. I happen to like him a lot.

I would love it if the Falcons picked up Tate in the 3rd. Douglas is coming off an injury and he'd be a great weapon for Ryan.

I think he'd certainly be better than Jenkins on the outside.

Detroit now has the #2 pick. Depending on who St. Louis takes (QB or Suh), Detroit will get one of Suh or Berry.

Hey Icness, can you imagine a Delmas/Berry safety combo? deadly!! Although I'm still hoping for Suh.

Delmas is the only rookie in NFL history with a safety, interception and scores off a fumble recovery and interception. He definitely has a case for DROY. Adding Suh or Berry to Delmas really would give Detroit some defensive pieces to build around.

I'd be very happy if Frisco ended up with the best cover corner in the draft. I'd love to get Berry, but I don't think he will fall to them (either at Carolina's or their own pick). If Clements does indeed move inside to safety, Haden would be a perfect pick.

I know nothing about Iupati, mainly because I have never seen an Idaho game in my entire life. But the O-line is in serious need of an upgrade. Staley is really the only guy I can have confidence in to be consistent. Is Iupati really that much better than guys that will be available in the 2nd, 3rd? I mean what kind of defensive talent does he face playing in Idaho? Once again, I qualify that statement by saying I have never seen him for even one snap.

Carolina pounding the Vikings last night hurts. I was counting on the Panthers losing that one, which would have definintely helped Frisco. Hopefully the Giants and Saints take care of business against them the last 2 weeks. I would love to see the Panthers end up 6-10, which should award the Ninaz a top 10 pick.

There are a lot of people who think Berry will wind up as an NFL CB, and I kinda think he'll play in the slot in nickel packages at least some of the time, a la Antrell Rolle as a "safety". I would still address the front first, but I wouldn't complain if they took Berry.

If Delmas played in New England or Dallas they'd have streets named after him already. He still blows a few too many coverages, but dude is an absolute stud and has a winning attitude. I saw a couple of Delmas jerseys on some fans yesterday and I bet we see more of that soon.

As a Lions fan, here's what you need to hope for: Jimmy Clausen lighting up workouts so the Rams have to take him. That just might happen, and that is the only way Suh doesn't go #1 overall. I would still be happy with Gerald McCoy but he's not quite as good as Suh.

I'm growing on Gerald McCoy, he's my #3 behind Suh/Berry.

I think Berry could spend some time at CB, but I think S will be his natural position in the NFL. Adding a guy can play both spots can only help the Lions who need alot of work on their defense.

Ic, thank you for the scouting report on Veldheer. He's one person I'm really curious about for this upcoming draft.

One question that I do have though: How does one determine if a lineman is a "natural" knee-bender or not? The concept seems obvious, but I'm not sure how to scout for it.

EDIT: Also, feel free to disregard the last PM I sent you. That was...rather overstepping, and I apologize.

Good question about the knee bending. Try to watch how he gets into a 2-pt. stance. Does he bend his knees first or does he bend his waist first and then adjust the knees? It's the difference between Flozell Adams or Max Starks (waist first) and Ryan Clady or Joe Thomas (knees first). You can also see it when they have to block short guys. Veldheer sets his knees first, but he then will tend to overbend at his waist--a common problem for tall guys.

So Russell Okung at 4 for the Skins, yes? Can we pencil that in now?

I want CJ Spiller. I just see him as the right fit for the pats. Maroney is leaving, I think this is gonna be Morris last year, too. A three headed monster of Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk and CJ Spiller would make me smile.

Ic-With Wes now down for probably at least half of next season, do you see the pats taking a wr early. Last time they traded up for a wr was Chad Jackson, and we all know how that worked out. But I think they definitely need one, unless they go the Free Agent route. Maybe team up a cheap signing in Terrell Owens along with Randy Moss, and have edelman as your slot guy?

Lol, patriots are in the playoffs and I'm already looking forward to the draft, I'm a sick guy. :-?

I didn't see Dexter McCluster in your top 3 rounds, I love the guy. He could slide because of his size, which gives me some hope the Vikings could take him as a replacement 3rd down back for Chester Taylor. I doubt it, but I think McCluster is going to make a lot of big plays for somebody.

Check Mock Draft 5.0, he more than made the cut. Moving up quickly. He just accepted for the Senior Bowl so he'll get more exposure there.
