Senior Bowl

Post#1 » by Icness » Mon Jan 25, 2010 11:48 pm

Monday notes:
http://www.realgmfootball.com/src_twelf ... owl_notes/

A few other quick impressions:
Jon Asamoah really disappointed. Very slow to slide his feet.

Mike Neal and Austen Lane had to play with plain white helmets and they appeared to bond quickly over that. Lane looks very much like a OLB/DE tweener.

Koa Misi made a great INT in LB/TE cover drills, jumped in front of Ed Dickson and picked off Canfield. I cannot emphasize enough how bad Canfield was today. Misi runs real well, looks like he can handle playing OLB.

Sean Weatherspoon drew raves, though I didn't catch much of him.

Both Notre Dame linemen here are in over their heads, esp. Sam Young. Young appears slimmer than at ND and that's not a good thing to pair with his stiff knees and waist lunging technique. Looks undraftable.

The Schofield injury looked very bad. I hope he's okay but it sure looked like he tore something in his knee.

Word is Schofield tore his ACL. That's real disappointing, because I was interesting to see what could come from him. He had a great season.

Ic, any idea where LeGarrette Blount stands in scouts' eyes after getting his invite?

they said on sportscenter that blount has around 3rd round talent but where he needs to prove himself is the team interviews and how well he explains himself

and if he doesn't he might not get drafted

Schofield tore his ACL not more than 15 feet from me during a pass rush drill. He was being held by Ducasse (don't buy the hype there either!) and tried to spin it back inside and his knee gave. He screamed one of those "oh no" type yelps where everyone just kind of sullenly knows and tries to move away.

Blount looks great running the ball. Very reminiscent of Larry Johnson in his prime. He's cut off his hair and looks leaner. He was very open and accessible tonight for media night and guys seemed to accept him. I didn't talk to him but I hope to by the end of the week. He's going to get grilled but that happens more at the Combine and team visits. This is sort of groundwork for him and his agent to earn back draft slotting and credibility. His agent worked real hard to get him here and I expect he's not going to blow it.

I saw the Schofield injury live on NFL Network(they showed North today) and feared that would be the injury. It looked like he was becoming a big riser after his D-MVP performance in the Shrine bowl and he blew past Ducasse on the first attempt with ease. Iupati was easily the most impressive OL from what I saw on NFLN.

Jeff, I believe people were disappointed in Asamoah's measurement as well? Shortest arms and 3rd lightest out of the OL. May need to play C. Also, any rumblings on the Tebow-fest(South practice)?

Asamoah had a rough Monday and his short arms were a surprise. I spent Tuesday looking at other positions but his buzz is tacking down.

Tebowmania is crazy. He had a very bad day yesterday and I'm really looking forward to seeing him up close today. FWIW he ducked out of media night for unknown reasons. It's hard to blame him though, I totally feel for Tebow in terms of the ridiculous demands and scrutiny on him. There are Florida people all over the place and the Bama fans are all about him too.

Nice write up Icness, I enjoyed reading it

But you miss-spelled Kyle Wilson's name at the beginning of it, confusing his last name with that of Kellen Moore :D I'm glad to hear he performed well though. Where does he rank among your CBs?

LOL! I fixed it. His brother actually emailed me and scolded me to my horror. Oops! They have a custom-painted RV down here with Wilson all flexed up on the side, pretty sweet.
He's either #1 or #2 amongst the seniors, a notch below Joe Haden. These first two days scream 1st round for Wilson.

South report coming shortly, I gotta go eat first.

What's the scouting report on Nate Allen of USF?

Thank for all the great work Icness. I find anytime I can read your insider look into these events to be extremely enjoyable and a really good read.

Quick question, where do you see FSU safety Myron Rolle slotted to go at? Do you think taking a year off for the Rhodes scholar will hurt his stock?

What's the scouting report on Nate Allen of USF?

Very good range, nice closing burst, solid tackler that plays downhill real well. He wasn't great in coverage all the time at USF, esp. on the deep ball. Great natural athlete, he could have played PG in the Big East. He is a little smaller than ideal, bigger than Berry though. He needs to work on pursuit angles and picking up the play a little quicker, though he's doing that well here.

Rolle is all rocked up and one of the knocks on him when he was playing was that his body lacked athleticism. His footwork is rusty and he's not as sudden with his speed as you'd like in terms of breaking on the ball in the air or chasing down a play on the other side. I think he's a 3rd/4th rounder--solid player but lower ceiling. If he can time well and impress in agility drills in Indy he could sneak into the 2nd but I doubt it. Taking a year off might have helped him because of what he's done to his body; I had him 5th-6th round for 2009.

Hows Matt Tennant doing?

Everyone besides Ic, that is reading this now is wondering, "who in the bleep is Matt Tennant?" Well, he's the Boston College Center, and probably only draft pick for BC :(

Edit-Thought that Norwood got injured, not Schofield. How was Bradon Graham? Do you think he can be a 3-4 olb? And how did Iupati do?

He's doing okay--not great, not poor, just okay. He's small and really has trouble anchoring against the better physical inside guys like Odrick and Cam Thomas, but he doesn't back down and he's pretty good on the move. He's a 4th/5th rounder, #3 center behind Pouncey from Florida and JD Walton from Baylor, who is playing here for the South team.

Robinson and Cox are here, Okung is not though he should have come because the linemen here are largely lousy and he really could have stood out.

Robinson actually looked very good today. He's probably the most consistently accurate QB here and threw a couple of lasers today, really surprising arm strength.

Cox does so much better in 11-on-11 than in individual drills, it's like he's a different player. In WR/DB drills he's consistently beaten and often looks real lost, but today in 11s he made a great read and jumped a route for an INT and also broke up another pass.
