Penn State mess/Sandusky
The iconic credibility as a program that has Penn St has established through the years.... is in a whole lotta trouble ...... but not with the NCAA
Jerry Sandusky, former longtime DC, is apparently a pedophile.
Two Penn St officials have been charged with perjury to a grand jury, and it appears that the Penn St administrators elected NOT to report to authorities incidents that happened on campus.
This almost certainly will force an end Paterno's reign ...... and if so, in an unfortunate and ugly way.

JOE PATERNO KNEW . . .
"According to the statement released Saturday by Pennsylvania attorney general Linda Kelly, the grand jury found that in March 2002, a then-graduate assistant (Mike McQueary, a former Nittany Lions quarterback who is now a fulltime assistant), witnessed Sandusky sexually assaulting an underage boy in the showers in the Lasch Football Building. According to Kelly, the graduate assistant went to Paterno's home "to explain what he had seen."
But Paterno said in his statement that McQueary had not been specific with him."

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
This is sad and horrible and disguisting. I wouldn't say it is unfortunate for Paterno, from what we know from Paterno's own statements, long deserved and long overdue. He was an enabler and a necessary cog, perhaps the main cog, for the 35 or so years of pedo mania.
Aside from the fact college football isn't a real sport with a real champion, the seamy underbelly is very ugly. And Penn State was one of the 'good' programs.

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
When I was reading the grand jury presentation I was getting angry thinking if one of the 5-6 adults who either witnessed the acts or knew about them would have contacted the police there wouldn't have been a vicitm 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. Also more than likely there were more than just 8 victims of this monster.
Paterno and the others are no different than some of the bishops/cardinals in the catholic church.
No, they didn't do the hidious acts, but they were more concerned about their instituions than they were about the victims. Shame on them.
Here's hoping those children who are now adults have some semblance of a normal life.
I read that grand jury report and had to stop a few times and take a break from it. Talk about a tough read.

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
This will be too much for Paterno to overcome if the GJ report is based on validated truths.
Obviously the testimony of the victims is a tidal wave .......but I'll wait a little longer before passing judgment.
It's pretty clear though that PSU may have messed up enough to sink the ship.....and if these allegations are true, then everyone's head needs to roll.
What I can't believe is that PSU never even sought out to identify the victims when they did their internal investigation......and apparently never reported the severity of Sandusky's actions to the charity.
JMO, but if I was betting man I'd say it's likely that Paterno won't finish the year

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
^^ I agree I'm guessing Paterno will be gone soon.
It's going to be i part the legacy of 46 coaching years, but this is something that supersedes sports.
We don't know what Paterno knew, the one witness didn't tell him what happened, there's a big difference between "there was an inappropriate incident in the shower just now" as opposed to graphically describing it. But if they knew enough to ask Sandusky to not come around, they maybe knew enough.
I've read some opinions that this may spur people nationally to make laws so that in these cases the witness and Paterno can't get out on a technicality, that will be interesting to follow.
Does everyone know the pedo's book is called Touched? How sick is that?

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
It sure sounds like its over for JoePa. Thank God. I hope this haunts him to his grave. Being in a position to help a kid (or kids) being treated like that and doing nothing, even to protect a friend (I'm guessing that's his rationale), is despicable.

Damn ^^^^^^
Looks like the end is within days for Paterno.
Penn St looks so foolish.......so many unnecessary victims, the embarrassment for both the students and players past and present, and a legacy ended in shame.

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
Isn't it funny that selling jerseys will probably get more NCAA involvement than this incident? Don't get me wrong, as a ND fan I loved the punishments Ohio State and USC got and still feel they're deserved. But if USC can't go to bowl games for two years...what do you do to Penn State?

Nothing says "lack of institutional control" like having an assistant coach anally raping a young boy in the locker room shower and then sweeping it under the rug. How in the hell does a prominent figure banned from campus still get such easy access?!
At minimum, the NCAA needs to ban Penn State from bowls and eliminate scholarships for at least 3 years. The "culture of permissive and rampant violation of NCAA rules"--and that is exactly the wording in the USC case--is so far beyond anything that UNC or USC or OSU did. I hope they kill the program for a year.
I don't know why but this whole thing has produced such a strong visceral reaction in me. I was shaking in anger yesterday about this and I'm still steaming mad now. I've never liked PSU but I always respected JoePa and the program for what they stood for. I feel personally lied to and depressed that it was all a charade. I guess I should know better by now but I didn't.

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
3 years?
First off, Sandusky didn't wake up one day and decided he liked boys. He's probably been doing this for years.
My opinion: Joe Pa should be fired. He shouldn't be allowed to leave on his own terms. At all.
2nd, Sandusky started at Penn State in 1969 and started his organization in 77. Joe Pa should have his wins removed from 77 on, including the two national championships.
THEN you get to bowl bans, loss of scholarships, etc.

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
I wouldn't penalize the school, their fans, and the players for this......with the incidents occurring a long time ago
But they'll all have to carry the shame of being associated with this dark shadow.....
The BOT's are meeting tonight and I'd expect that Spanier and Paterno probably hit the door tomorrow.....jmo.

Re: Penn State mess/Sandusky
My thoughts:
1. Nothings stopping Penn State from firing Joepa right now. They won't because its obvious they value their football program more than they do the sanctity of young kids anus's. Joe Pa is a senile babbling old fool and shouldn't have been in charge of this program over the last 10 years anyways. On Sportscenter they had to put up subtitles when he talks because hes so old and pathetic. He crapped his pants vs OSU a few years ago. And thats the guy running the show..... disgraceful....
2. Theres no way that this goes unreported if it was the other way around ie Sandusky seeing that the intern was raping the kid in the showers. Everyone tried to protect a friend/colleague instead of the children.
3. The true number of children violated by this creep was probably closer to 100 than it is to the reported 8 or 9. The number of people who come out and report getting molested is extremely small due to the shame, and the fact that this has national spotlight now - the shame is probably too much to bare for most of these victims to come out and admit what happened. And like Rafael said - he didn't wake up one day and decide he wanted to start molesting boys. Hes probably been doing this for decades.
4. Agree with Icness - nothing says loss of institutional control than the HC and AD enabling this creep and letting him turn the lockerrooms into a pedophile dungeon.
5. The more that gets reported on this the more disgusting it gets. Did you know that Sandusky gave the commencement speech for Penn State 2 years ago? The subject of his speech - protecting americas youth.
Way to go Penn State - way to go.

So its ok for the NCAA to strip Bush of his Heisman years after he won it, and remove wins from the USC books but it's not OK to remove wins for child molestation? Double standard there dude. If any university deserves the death penalty or something close to it, its Penn State. This is real folks, this is real life. This isn't some 19 year old kid selling merch for tats. USC/Bush were completely different.
That was cheating..... and gains were enabled because of football infractions.
This scandal is criminal, the disgusting pedophile will go to jail, and as despicable as this is it's not a football issue. Spaneir, Paterno, the AD and others have or will lose jobs, some may face charges down the road.....but this had nothing to do with how the team made it's journey.
You want to execute a city for the actions of it's mayor and town council. Everyone is angry, but I don't see the need to take out the anger on players past and present, fans, faculty, community and students.
They had nothing to do with this.

Couldn't agree more. All the money under the table and special benefits to players is so trivial something like this. I couldn't care less what Penn State fans and players feel is fair in light of what that University enabled.

What difference does that make? You think all the players at SMU were getting benefits or that all the fans were in on it? If you are so concerned about the players give them the ability to transfer like they did those SMU players.
You're correct that it's not right to compare this to what's happened at Ohio State and USC, it is far, far worse and shows much more corruption in the schools football program and should receive the harshest punishment.
