Week 1 Open Thread: Let's Get This Season Started!

Post#1 » by Da Schwab » Sat Sep 1, 2012 3:56 pm

Week One already kicked off a few days ago, and we've seen a couple decent games to start.

- Sparty squeaked one out against Boise St. (which eliminates them from any BCS contention whatsoever)
- South Carolina barely got past Vandy on the back of Marcus Lattimore
- And, in lower-level conference news: Idaho was defeated, at home, by an FCS team that went 6-5 last season

Big games on deck for today:

- Clemson vs Auburn
- Louisville vs Kentucky
- VaTech vs Georgia Tech
- Ohio vs Penn St.

And the big one... #8 Michigan vs #2 Alabama (in Jerry Jones' Cathedral and Pizza Hut)

Let's have some good discussion and have a great season. Go Badgers!

I've enjoyed watching Miami vs. Boston College- the momentum has been swinging at a fast pace but Miami is taking control. I've got really low expectations for the Canes this year (especially with their brutal schedule) but it will be intersting to see how the young guys do. Duke Johnson is living up to the hype today.

Discussion for the big one:

Michigan has a dominant punter, averaging 50 yards on 4 kicks.
Alabama's punter only has 2 kicks yet still beats even that statistic.

This is an ASS KICKING!

But to Michigan's defense, the head coach did not prepare them for this game or handle things right with some other issues at play. He's a good blue collar guy but not a smart strategist and he's a bit out of his league in this match-up. We need a strategy assistant to help out with the vision of the team and the game plan at all levels. Our defense and offense and ST has a lot of issues right now and our coach is just a recruiter/rapport builder, not much of a strategist.

31-0 for now, but a 70 yard pass gives us a shot to get some points before the half, yay.

Didn't prepare them for the game? They had all summer to prepare and just can't keep up. Even as a fan of a Big Ten team, I know that not one team in the conference would stand a chance against the top four teams in the SEC (Bama, LSU, Georgia and South Carolina).

Not saying they didn't have time to prepare, just that they did a bad job at it. Plus we suspended our top RB and another player just recently before the game, they didn't have time to prepare for not having those guys, and they didn't have a lot of time and a good way to prepare the rest of the team for the news, so those things factor into it as well since they would have likely been preparing all summer to play with a strong RB instead of the back-ups who did a terrible job because they really aren't that good.

Bottom line is all that matters is we lost the game and I think our coach is the chief person to blame from my perspective. I think he has done a terrible job since coming here and he made countless mistakes in the game, and he does in most games because he's not a good thinker. Heck we had two times close to each other a 4th and short down a lot of points near midfield, and this lame-duck coach we have can't figure out the optimal strategy choice. One time he punted and the other he went for it. He can't even stay consistent in his analysis of what the proper choice is.

I think you're just making excuses for a not very good team from a not very good conference.

Even with Toussaint in that game, Michigan still wouldn't have come within three TDs.

Not at all. Those aren't good excuses to make to try and sell why the team is really good. I think the Big 10 sucks, I mean a couple of high profile schools are Penn St and Ohio St who have taken major hits because of terrible scandals, so I'm with you on the conference sucking. And I don't think Michigan is a good team at all even though that's my alma mater. I have been so consumed with thinking about the Lions lately that it wasn't very long ago that I found out we were ranked 8th and I was quite surprised by that although we have a weak schedule and could win almost all of our other games. I just know the pundits out there don't know how to adjust for the Brady Hoke factor, because I pay close attention and I know what football people are worth when I examine them and I have a very low opinion of him and his football intelligence. He's a great likeable guy but he doesn't have the smarts and that's disaster in my mind as this is a very cerebral game to me in many ways that require many different types of intelligence across a broad spectrum of facets from psychology to preparation to game theory and strategy etc etc.

I think we have very good players and talent but that we are compromised by atrocious coaches. We have had a deplorable set of coaches and coordinators for the last decade and it drives me nuts. I'm a Lions fan and I have despised how bad the Lions have been, but I think Michigan's set of coaches and staff has always been worse than the Lions, that's really a bad sign. But that's what we deal with. Nobody sees Michigan suck as much as Detroit has over the last decade but that's because Michigan has always had strong recruiters and a good name and image and they have been doing a good job getting talent that whole time, they just can't coach or manage the gameplans well.

That was a beat down in every sense.

Michigan was outplayed, outmanned, and out coached.

GT/VaTech was terrific. The whole fiasco at the end of the first half was stupid and it was first time I've actually seen Frank Beamer angry.

I know VaTech is accustomed to these nail-biters and low scoring games, but that's not how you wanna come out of the blocks at home.

The ACC may be a cakewalk for FSU this year.

WOW. First of all, i put alot of weight into arkansas this year. I thought they would be better, they flat out suck.

Secondly, THE PAC-12 IS WINNING THE CHIP THIS YEAR! USC is coming to take the title this year after being stripped of much of our scholarships and talent. Just a shame what the NAZI NCAA did to us, just a shame. If we dont make it, it is due to the thin layered depth that we have, and injuries.

AND IF USC DOES NOT MAKE IT?! That means the oregon ducks have outlasted us and out gunned us to the pac-12 championship, and therefore the ducks will win the national title this year. Either way . . . THE PAC-12 IS WINNING THE CHIP THIS YEAR!

Thirdly, the Cronyism that is the SEC is at an end, should the TROJANS faceoff with an alabama or an LSU in the finals, we will give them a spanking that hasnt been seen since the last time we killed an SEC team. That, is not a problem. Our problem is not getting tripped up in our own conference.

Lastly, MATT BARKLEY will win the heisman trophy. He will then immediately begin to smash the trophy on the stage, throw the pieces back to the Heisman trust, and tell them to F-THEMSELVES.

LOL

I guess you'll have to include Stanford into the mix.....as it looks like USC not only showed some flaws, but this probably is not the last loss they'll take either.

Looks to me like USC is headed for a 9-3 season....
