USC has hired Washington's Steve Sarkisian as coach and interim coach Ed Orgeron has resigned, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Sarkisian in 2009 took over a Washington program that went 0-12 the previous season, and he returned the Huskies to respectability. He led Washington to a 34-29 record (24-21 Pac-12) in five seasons.

The Huskies (8-4) finished third in the Pac-12 North with a 5-4 conference record. They had three straight seven-win seasons entering this year.

Orgeron resigned Monday after he was passed over for the job, a source said.

Orgeron was "outraged" by athletic director Pat Haden's decision, even though Haden offered to make Orgeron an assistant head coach and one of the nation's highest paid assistants, according to the source.

The Trojans went 6-2 under Orgeron after Haden fired Lane Kiffin on Sept. 28.

I really can't blame Orgeron for being mad, he rallied this team when Kiffin got fired and has done a pretty great job with him at the helm, especially with how short-handed they are.

On the other hand, I could see Sark being the next Pete Carroll for this program. Once the sanctions are over with, he could bring back USC to the top of the recruiting charts pretty easily.

They did Orgeron dirty. He had that team playing pretty well, the UCLA loss did him in?

True, Orgeron did a nice job this year after Kiffen was let go, but his whole body of work as a head coach prior (Mississippi) was not very good.

SK rebuilt UW after taking it over from being on the rock bottom of football.

Yep. I would say he's probably better off being an OC or even an OL coach at a major program. People at Ole Miss love him as a person but he was a lousy head coach.

Apparently Orgeron doesn't think so ..... with him leaving a big salary on the table at USC.

#1. he could not get the offense going with consistency. #2. And like some of you said, his track record as a head coach wasn't too good. #3. Besides, defeat ND and UCLA and you've got the job. That's 3 strikes right there.

I haven't heard of O getting another job yet...not that he has to have one immediately.

I think Sark is a good fit for USC. He has that sense of "nasty" that they need there, and I think he is a better coach than Kiffin.
