Brown did a good job there, and should get a ton of credit for re-establishing the Horns as a quality program again (minus a hiccup season or two).

Best of luck to Brown, but the Texas Nation better hope they find the right coach.....or else follow the path that Tennessee took when Fulmer was let go.

Might be the most coveted coaching position in college football so landing an elite coach shouldn't be hard. Take your pick.

he did better than his predecessor but 2 conference titles in 16 years is not very good when you're suppose to be the big dog. helluva recruiter though.

he won there, but only when he had absolutely amazing qb play (and for my money the best or 2nd best college qb ive ever seen play in vince young)

i keep hearing how it might be the best job in america, and perhaps it might be, but ive always felt that to be overblown or overhyped, but perhaps it's my disdain for the school

I don't think its overrated as far as head coaching jobs go. Huge salary for a college coach, talent rich state where people get really into football, and living in Austin. Its not as attractive as an nfl job, but I don't think there is a better college job to have.

It's the highest-paid coaching job in America at any level for any sport, or it will be if it's not already.

Austin is a very easy place to recruit from, and also to lure in kids. It's the only game in town. Good school, exceptional facilities, more boosters with back-channel ways of funneling players benefits than imaginable.

I agree he's been a great recruiter but only a good coach. Part of the problem is that Texas is huge on early commits, and they wind up with all kinds of kids who athletically developed quicker and don't have the upside or growth that other programs get with less prominent recruits (TCU as an example). That's a big reason why I pay very little attention to recruiting.

i doubt new coach gets that big of a raise, there was a big public outcry and some kinda resolution passed when brown's salary went from 3 to 5 million couple years ago.

Yeah, but we're talking about a school with its own TV network and the best brand recognition in their region of the country. Texas is always in the top three schools each year in athletic budgets/revenue. They could resurrect Bear Bryant, pay him $20 million a year and still be okay.

I'm very intrigued to see who they get to replace Mack Brown. Paul Feinbaum has been saying that Nick Saban has had a new contract sitting on his desk in Tuscaloosa since Friday, but he hasn't touched it. That's gotta be him waiting to see what Brown's decision is.

I don't think Sumlin, Art Briles, Jim Mora, or Les Miles would take the job, especially since three of those four just signed very lucrative long-term deals at their schools, but I can't really think of many other people they'd go after. Maybe they stay in house and promote Major Applewhite? Dabo Swinney? Jimbo Fisher?

I also wanna bring up this point as to why Saban's name keeps coming up:

This morning I had Mike & Mike on as background noise and this topic came up. Greeny mentioned how Saban makes sense because he's better at building programs than maintaining them. He did it with LSU and now he may do it with Bama. Now, he has the opportunity to go to Texas, make them a powerhouse again and make a program that's already swimming in cash even better off.

Finebaum cannot be respected for his views on Saban, too close to him personally. He refuses to acknowledge that Saban has no conscience or soul. Anyone who honestly believes Bama is more appealing than Texas is delusional beyond help, and I say that as someone who loathes UT.

In related news, TAMU bumped Sumlin to $5M per year with massive buyout.

Well, it's not like he's bad at maintaining them either. All of the programs he's been at have been in pretty good shape when he's left. He seems to be the type that enjoys a new challenge though.

If I had to make a prediction, I'd say Dabo Swinney gets the gig. My dark horse is Jack Del Rio.

dabo wouldnt be a terrible hire. think i even saw a jimbo fisher mention, and an article on some longhorns site saying maybe look at mike gundy (with his track record at osu, he'd probably make a great UT hire)

I'd love to see what James Franklin could do with the resources and recruiting power that Texas offers. UT would be taking a risk, but it could pay off huge.

I actually like the Franklin idea. Texas has high academic standards so taking him from Vandy would be a nice hire.

Couldn't agree more with your take there. I moved to the Dallas area at the age of 18, and quickly learned that you better love the Longhorns if you're anywhere in the state of Texas, or you'll hear about it constantly. Remember taking a ton of crap from friends for saying that Larry Fitzgerald would be a far better pro than Roy Williams.
