heisman race
never too early to start the heisman talk. cal launched a website promoting desean jackson a few weeks ago. www.the1towatch.com
being a wr at a school that's not a "traditional power" he doesn't have a gerat shot. cal would probably be better off focusing on longshore, but what the heck, this probably helps recruiting more than pushing longshore would.

Lessee...a quick list of Heisman candidates to start here:
Brian Brohm
Steve Slaton
Pat White
John David Ass
Colt McCoy
DeSean Jackson
Darren McFadden (he was runner-up, after all)
Chad Henne
Michael Hart
Tim Tebow
Given that list, DeSean Jackson has no shot in hell, but he'll give Pac-10 DCs fits as per usual.

i know jackson doesn't have much of a shot, but he might get invited to ny, that'd be a nice first step. jj arrington went over 2000 yards for a top 10 cal team (top 5 at the time of the heisman voting) and didn't even sniff ny.
jackson needs cal to go at least 11-1 and to have a huge game in a win over usc. that'd make him the west coast candidate, and it helps to have a region to yourself. a bunch of the others listed don't even have a team to themselves and will split votes. i haven't looked at arkansas' schedule, but my guess is that they won't be good enough to get mcfadden serious heisman consideration.

This is true. The West Coast tends to recognize and support its own.
The problem I see with him is, going in, he's gonna have to improve his numbers (say, 1,400 yards and 12 TDs) AND be supported by a phenomenal season from Cal. Then he has a very real shot. But it's a crowded field headed into the start of the season. I personally am not high on Jackson but he can make something of his season if he wants to.

heisman-wise, i'm not sure that's true. if you're not a qb or rb, you need something extra to win. jackson is the premier punt returner in the nation (he was last year anyway) but he may not get many return opportunities now that he's a very well known threat. he had 4 return tds last year, and return tds always make highlight reels. he'll need that kind of performance again this year, but i don't know if he'll be punted to enough.

I believe he broke an NCAA record last year for passing yards or passing touchdowns and was 5th in Heisman race last year.
I don't have Ray Rice on there either. That was a very rough list. But I think you'll agree most of the names on there have a shot.

I would think the same too but its all about wins. His team is going to need to step up for him to be in the race for the Heisman. He can probably pull it off himself, he plays like a one man team out there.
My pick though, has to go to Steve Slaton. I think West Virginia might win it all and even beat USC at the BCS championship game.
