3-game suspension for borrowing car

Post#1 » by Monkeyfeng06 » Sat Sep 1, 2007 12:10 pm

AUSTIN -- The Texas Longhorns suspended wide receiver Billy Pittman for three games Friday after learning he broke amateurism rules by borrowing a friend's car this summer.

In a statement, the No. 4 Longhorns did not identify the friend but said the person had no connections to the school.

Pittman, a senior, was already going to miss Saturday's game against Arkansas State with a shoulder injury. He will be eligible to return Sept. 22 against Rice.

"I want everyone to know I'm really sorry," Pittman said. "It was an honest mistake and I'll do everything I can to make up for it."

Pittman has 69 catches for 1,206 yards and nine touchdowns over the last two seasons.

"Our football staff talked with Billy as soon as they became aware of the situation and turned over their information to our compliance office," Texas men's athletic director DeLoss Dodds said in the statement. "Billy has been very forthcoming throughout the process, and we conducted a thorough department and university investigation."

Let's say a player has a "friend" who just happens to run a car dealership and that "friend" lets him "borrow" a new Lexus for a while...

I'm not saying that this is what happened in this case (I don't know really what happened here). But the rules are there for a reason. I can't imagine that this is a situation of this guy borrowing a classmate's beater for a few days. I would suspect that this friend was a recent alumni and possible donor to the school. It may have been an innocent situation, but it most likely still broke NCAA rules.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.
