How do you become a I-A school?

so appalachian state beat michigan, what's their chances of joining the I-A division? they are very good and they can compete in the I-A division for sure. what's the process?

You need to average 15,000 people for home games for 4 years.

It is a money losing prospect for teams like Appalachian State or Montana. They move up to a level where they get beat by "professional" programs, and resort to being a early season sacrificial lamb for money, a la Utah State. And no matter how good they get on any given year they have ZERO chance of being a champion.

Delany FTW for bringing up Montana. Your a god IMO.

Anyways, football isnt the only sport that schools have to compete in. If they were to move up, they have a certain amount of sports and it is a big process for the state and the school. Trust me, Montana has talked about moving up to the FBS (formely 1-a) for 5-10 years now.
