Week 11 (Nov. 8-10) thread
It's the 4th quarter of the WVU-Louisville game and the Cardinals are hanging tough thanks to West Virginia taking their foot off the gas.
Best games for the weekend:
#1 Ohio State hosts Illinois. Last year the Illini nearly pulled off the upset, but this time it's in the Horseshoe and the Buckeyes have found a gamebreaker in Beanie Wells.
#12 USC at #24 Cal. The winner keeps slim hope alive for a New Years Day bowl, while the loser is almost certain to wind up playing a MWC team in front of 10,000 apathetic fans.
#18 Auburn at #10 Georgia. The Bulldogs can really help themselves in the SEC East race and stay alive for an at-large BCS berth with a win, but the Tigers always play better against higher-ranked teams and are beginning to find their way on defense.
#16 UConn at Cincinnati. The Bearcats salvaged a nice upset last week over USF. Can they do it again at home against a UConn team coming off a tough loss?
Florida State at #11 Virginia Tech. The Noles offense is finally catching up to their pretty stout D, but the Hokies are awful tough at Lane Stadium.
Other games:
Texas A&M at Missouri--should be no problem for the Tigers, but with Kansas next week could they get caught looking ahead?
Michigan at Wisconsin--If the Wolverines win they're almost certain to make the Rose Bowl. Who'd have thunk it!
Kentucky at Vanderbilt--Andre Woodson needs a huge game against a decent defense to keep his fledgling Heisman hopes alive
Arkansas at Tennessee--The Vols continue their maddening ability to play like legit SEC champs one week and like a middling MAC East team some weeks. McFadden fans are hoping for the latter to keep his Heisman momentum moving.
Kansas at Oklahoma State--Upset Alert! If the Cowboy defense remembers how to tackle, that is.
Boston College at Maryland--Tough place for the Eagles to rebound from their loss. Take the points and the Terps.
Wake Forest at Clemson--This is precisely the type of game that drives Clemson fans nuts about Bowden's Tigers.
Alabama at Miss. State--If there is justice in the world, the home team gets bowl eligible against the Sabans.
Arizona State at UCLA--I said a couple weeks ago that ASU was primed for a losing streak, and I'd bet on the schizo Bruins to extend it here. They're awful on the road but this game is at home and they're fighting mad after losing to Arizona last week.
LSU hosts LA Tech--anyone going to give LSU crap for playing an awful in-state program, like what Ohio State gets when they play Akron, or what Oregon gets for hosting cupcakes and rarely crossing the Rockies every year? Freaking hypocrites!
Ohio U. already lost to Akron this week, so the Bobcats need to finish with a win over the hated Redhawks next week to finish 6-6. Muck Fiami!
And the Mountaineers escape with a lucky 38-31 win in spite of doing their best to keep Louisville in the game. Nice game-winning run by Pat White after he got absolutely drilled earlier.

why the criticism here? at least the 2 you mentioned have played a halfway decent team, is this OSU's best non conference game? its not like the big ten is loaded w/juggernauts. its pretty much michigan and the buckeyes and a couple of decent teams.

I really hope McFadden and Jones run all over Tennessee so Georgia can be in control of their own destiny. Georgia dominated Auburn last year and Brandon Cox completed as many passes to our safety (Tra Battle) as any of his receivers. Should be a closer game this year but Georgia is still the better team.

Being (Please Use More Appropriate Word) is macho? No wonder George Bush is the president.

Well said, but let's leave the politics on the current affairs board

I long ago gave up trying to defend Ohio State's academics. Heck, it's a big part of the reason I didn't go there. But I do give OSU credit for this--you can major in absolutely anything there, and in some select disciplines you won't find better faciliies or more reknowned faculty anywhere in the world. That matters not for most athletes, unfortunately.
My Michigan counter:
Former Wolverine David Terrell did a radio interview with the "Huge Show", a syndicated Michigan afternoon drive gabfest not noted for intellect (admission--I'm a regular guest on the NFL Draft). The blowhard host asked Terrell about what his first car he bought with his NFL check was. This is almost an exact transcription of the dialogue:
Was it a Hummer? Nah. Was it a Caddy? Nah. Okay then, Mercedes right David? Nah bro. Most people get themselves a Mercedes. I gots me a Benz.
About 10 seconds of stunned silence, followed by childish laughter.
A Benz, huh? Yeah, bro, they be hard to find.
The complete irony is that both of Terrell's parents were Daimler-Chrysler retirees.

other than me and manocad throwing cheap shots at each other for funzees, i cant tell you how wrong you are. ironically, we go waaaay back about this kind of stuff that i made fun of him for being nerd b/c he went there.

funny you mention that, biggest (Please Use More Appropriate Word) of all is a graduate of yale. life will teach you kiddo, who you know more important than where you get your degree and believe me being an OSU graduate helps you pretty well in that area considering the amount of alums around the world.

i think OSU s education quality(or lackthere of) pretty overblown. in about 2 years i ll be graduating from fisher college of business which is ranked in top 15 in the country and graduates start out with 50-75k. like i told manocad many times, if i ll get 75k for flipping burgers, i ll gladly do it. As for the athletes, its not a michigan or OSU thing, you ll see there are retards in almost every single major sports program who has no business in higher education. There s a Roy Tarpley for every Clarett and there s a Channing Crowder for every Simpson and Landale. its all around the country and just a matter of how much publicity it gets. On a side note if you didnt like OSU s academics, why the hell did you go to OU?

Just something else to add to this ongoing side discussion:
Yesterday I wore an Oregon State sweatshirt to the office. Towards the end of the day I was chatting with a coworker who was leaving the agency in order to go back to school to get a PhD. Someone asked about his plans and, although he's still undecided on where to go, he points to my sweatshirt and says "I may even end up in Akron" (the implication being that he may end up at Ohio State). Now, we can waive the mistake of thinking that Ohio State was in Akron...he was at least in the correct state and since he's not from the midwest its understandable that he would not be too sure where exactly the university was located. But the fact that he is pointing to my Oregon State sweatshirt (seriously, it has large orange block letters on a black background that read "OREGON STATE") and thinking that it represented Ohio State University...well, that's just sad. If he represents the typical student that is attracted to Ohio State, well, there could be something to the argument of them not being too bright.
(True story, BTW).

This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

You are talking to a guy who has recommendation letters from 2 Medicine Department heads and one Dean of the school of medicine, all at top 10 med schools in the country. So, I know the importance of networking. Being a graduate of a below average mid-western state school is not the greatest of advantages.

Where did you get that stat from? MBA's average out at about 85 starting salary.
First the federal government borrowed money; then gave the money to Bank of America; then I borrowed some of that money from Bank of America and gave it to the federal government; then the federal government gave the money back to Bank of America.

lmao.not even close. i hope dean of the school knows who he is giving the recommendation. just FYI, only one midwest school separates illinois and OSU in national rankings(PSU).

50 large sounds realistic with a year of experience. Most business majors are not making $75,000 straight out of college. The highest I know of is $65,000 and the kid speaks like 4 languages.
Funny you forgot to mention 9 state schools that are between us. No matter how you twist it, OSU is at best a second tier state school.
And half-ass jabs at my intelligence coming from a business major are pretty amusing.
