This site ranks teams' recruiting classes by a combination of average rank of players and current team's place in the standings. Probably more than a little flawed but it's an interesting gauge. Of course, if you're a fan of a top team, your ranking won't be very high considering that you have nowhere to really go but down.

Ron Zook is a good recruiter.

That has always been his rep, but he is the best in the Big 11.

You've gotta hand it to schools like BYU and Boise State who get absolute dregs to work with and take the world by storm.

I think HS recruiting is completely overrated, or rather, recruiting "experts" often have absolutely no idea of the real level of skill and talent of the HS players. The opposing competition level is so wildly variable, the coaching is so variable, the maturation process is so unknown. A lot of the time the premier recruits are simply early bloomers, not superior football players.

I think the Boise States, Central Michigans, and Wake Forests of the world do a very good job finding the guys who are about to blossom, not guys already prime fruit. There's also the ability to target guys who fit into what system the coaches run or type of player the coaches want.

This doesn't take into account transfers right? Lots of the top classes have tons of transfers when good players realize they're far back on the depth chart.

USF has really overachieved the last 3-4 years, mainly due to how personable and dedicated to the program Coach Leavitt is.so I'm not surprised they're considered one of the tops.

Also, Wisconsin does a pretty good job at recruiting. Alvarez and Bielema (well mostly Alvarez) always seem to bring in stellar RBs, OLs and DBs.

The one thing I don't like is that all classes are weighed equally.

Just on common sense, the a strong junior/senior class is more likely to reflect in the win column as most teams rely on upperclassmen. I don't know how to fix this, but considering how many freshmen get redshirted or never see the field, I don't think it's quite fair to expect results this year from that class. Still an interesting piece.

Redshirt. I thought we were going to have to play him once Brown and Lumpkin went down, but fortunately Moreno was able to carry the load.

All this tells me is Mike Riley > Mike Bellotti...which I already knew.

You're funny. All this tells me is that Riley does a lot with his less heralded talent, while Bellotti does a good deal with more heralded talent.

The thought that Riley is a better coach than Bellotti is laughable even in the face of a Civil War blown by the scout team offense.

Well said. I also think underclassmen leaving early for the NFL draft should be factored in as well--as a positive for the program, not as a negative for how their departure impacted the team on the field.

How many championships has Bellotti won on any level? I assure you that Riley has more on his resume.

with jake locker on the team, it's easier for willingham now to recruit!!
