Capital One Bowl berth seems likely
There are still some variables at play, but Georgia remains on track for the Capital One Bowl.
After the BCS games make their selections, the Capital One gets the next choice of SEC and Big Ten teams for the New Year’s Day matchup in Orlando.
If both Alabama and Florida go to BCS games, Georgia would have the best record of the SEC teams available to the Capital One.
Under its agreement with the SEC, the Capital One is required to take the available team with the best overall record or a team within one win of the best record.
At the moment, no SEC team behind Georgia is within one win of the Bulldogs’ overall record. If Georgia were to lose to Tech, any of three SEC teams — Mississippi, LSU and South Carolina — could climb within one victory of Georgia’s overall record by winning their regular-season finales. Still, Georgia’s better record and head-to-head victories over LSU and South Carolina would argue for the Bulldogs.
From the Big Ten, the Capital One will take league co-champ Ohio State unless the Buckeyes get a BCS bid. If that happens, the Capital One will take Big Ten runner-up Michigan State.
