Michigan tailback Sam McGuffie has decided to transfer.

McGuffie was given his release by coach Roch Rodriguez, thewolverine.com reported Friday.

McGuffie, a freshman from Texas, has been reported to be homesick and is expected to enroll in a school closer to home. If he goes to a Division I school he will have to sit out a year.

He was one of the most highly touted recruits of the last decade, and after one season in Ann Arbor, he has decided to leave. Apparently the major reason for his transfer is his health, particularly concussions, but after the type of season Michigan just had, I wouldn't be sure that's the only reason.

When you say he was highly touted, I hope you don't mean he was considered anything more than a good prospect. The hype he had didn't match the level of player he is. If he hadn't jumped over a lot of people in HS he would have been just another top 100 recruit.

Not a surprising move for him. I actually thought he would succeed in Michigan's offense. I thought he would be a decent prospect coming out, but nothing more. The teams I think he might go to are, Oklahoma St., Texas A&M, and Texas Tech. I think in the end he will go to A&M particually because it is closer to home and Michael Goodson is leaving after this season. Cyrus Gray and McGuffie would be a nice 1-2 punch in the future.

The word from Michigan is that McGuffie lacked mental toughness and he won't be missed. The people I talked to expect him to go to TAMU.
