First year in big keeper league, looking for advice

Post#1 » by lpsevier » Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:30 pm

I've inherited a team in a very well established (read: expensive) keeper league.

This team made the playoffs last year, but didn't win anything.

We can keep up to 9 players.

Standard head to head scoring with PPR.

There are no ties either ,that goes to bench points.

Also - I have the 3rd pick in the upcoming snake style draft. I have bolded the players I intend on keeping thus far.

I'm looking for roster thoughts, and who I should target at 3 between Matthews, Best, Spiller, Hardesty, etc.

Thanks!

QB:

Tom Brady
Mark Sanchez

RB:

Tim Hightower
Fred Jackson
Reggie Bush
Willis McGahee

WR:

Austin Colle
Jerricho Cotchery
Steve Smith NYG
Bernard Berrian
Mario Manningham

TE:

Vernon Davis
Donald Lee

K:

Stephen Gostkowski
Rian Lidell

D:

Saints
Broncos

Under no circumstances keep a kicker and unless there is nothing to pick from I wouldn't keep a defense either.

How many players are in the league?

I'd probably keep Sanchez since u do get to keep so many players, and he is a solid number 2 QB who could play a bye week or maybe flip for someone else.

At 3 if Mathews or Best isn't available I'd deal the pick. Someone will be high on Spiller and I'd deal him for a more productive back.

10 players.

I"m actually leaning towards agreeing with you on the kicker side. In fact, I'm not keeping him. However, defense some pretty solid points now that I've reviewing the league specs myself, so I do think I will keep the Saints.

INT's are penalized, and I don't want to waste that spot on Sanchez. I'll pickup another one late.

I've now discovered that Shonn Greene may be drop and available when I pick.

Decisions!

I'm pretty new to fantasy FB, heading into my second full season in a league where you have to keep 2 players. The way I look at it, it's all about value, and you might not want to keep your best players. I picked up Miles Austin off of waivers, and he'll wind up being my 11th draft pick. That's awesome value.

As for my second keeper, I don't think I'll get good value by locking up/keeping one of my higher picks. Fitzgerald was my first pick, and he would be worth it, but you can't keep two players of the same position. So I might just keep one of my lowest picks, because they probably won't win or lose the league for me, and then I still have flexibility at my more important higher draft positions.

So IMO, it all depends on where your potential keepers were originally drafted, or what draft slot they will fill for you. Because I wouldn't keep Brady if he's your 1st pick, and I wouldn't keep Bush if he takes up your 2nd pick. See what I'm getting at? Defenses and kickers don't seem like bad keepers because they are usually your last 2 picks in the draft, and those picks wouldn't be used on great players anyways. But if you waste your keeper on a player drafted really high, and he doesn't perform, you're in a lot of trouble. Good luck.
