Keeper league help (update: add/drop advice?)

Post#1 » by Maritimer » Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:35 pm

10 team keeper league (*=keeper), 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 RB/WR, 1 TE, 1 DST, 1 K. Standard ESPN scoring.

Rivers*
Turner* / Greene* / Best / R. Bush / Hardesty
Smith* (CAR) / Bowe* / Welker / Maclin / Britt
Witten
Cards DST
Bironas

FWIW, I plan on streaming DSTs for the first few weeks until a DST I like which has passed its bye week comes on the waiver wire. Cardinals play the Rams in Week 1.

Moves so far
Dropped Kenny Britt for Louis Murphy

Britt for Jones is a good idea.

I wouldn't do the Maclin trade in a keeper league.

The WR of yours that I'd try to trade is Smith, in a keeper league I'd see if you could pry Crabtree away from whoever has him. If you could do Smith for Crabtree straight up, I think you'd put yourself in a great position. You might lose a little this season, but set yourself up nicely long term.

I wouldn't be shy about moving Haresty either.

Someone else got Jones ahead of me on the waiver wire, so I ended up with Murphy. Housh is still out there. I also don't think I'll be doing the Brown-Maclin deal. Thanks.

We only get to keep 5 keepers a year, so it's not so important to load up on young talent now in the hopes of building for next year. I will keep that idea in mind though.

Like your team a lot besides Steve Smith, I think he's going to be hot smoldering trash this year.

I would go grab Housh. If he stays healthy he's going to have his 90+ catches.

Meh. He's also a year older, is no threat for YAC and had a dreadful year last year. Cliff Levingston would go for the higher upside of Louis Murphy.

Edit to add: No to the trade offer. Brown could slowly take duties from Addai but it might not happen for a while. You've basically already got that in Hardesty. Keep Maclin and his upside; he'll be gold if DeSean Jackson gets hurt.

Here's another question:

Sidney Rice is still sitting on the waiver wire. Do I pick him up instead of Murphy (or Hardesty, I guess), or do I wait a week or two to see if Murphy is worth keeping or trading?

OK, well it looks like Hardesty is out for the year -- ACL. Considering my roster (above), who should I pick up and stash? Here are some options (feel free to throw your favourite sleeper out there):

The Big Home Run Possibility
* Sidney Rice -- We have shallow benches (only 5 spots), so I'm tempted to wait. I tried to hold on to Anthony Gonzalez last year and got burned.

A Lesser Homer Run Possibility
* Legadu Naanee -- Everyone's drafting Malcolm Floyd, but Naanee seems just as likely to me to become the #2 target behind Gates, and that team is still going to throw.

RB Hopefuls
* Leon Washington -- Carroll supposedly loves him
* James Davis or Peyton Hillis -- Harrison has looked awful, so he may not keep his job.
* Slaton, C Taylor, any NE back, Leon Washington -- Nothing exciting, but possible points to be had.
* Any handcuff except Rashad Jennings -- All others are available. Dixon, Gerhart and Ringer are tempting as "just in case" guys. Snelling might be worth a pick up since I own Turner.
* Ryan Torain -- If he makes it as the #3 RB, I can easily see him passing Portis and whoever else is left on the depth chart.

Safe-ish WRs
* Housh -- If he gets traded to a passing team, like the Vikings, he could have value.
* Derrick Mason -- A Boldin injury really gives him value.
* Mario Manningham, Devery Henderson, Malcolm Jenkins, Cotchery -- #2/#3 WRs who could get looks

Deeper WRs with some upside
* Any other Seahawks WR -- Williams looks great so far and Butler looked great last night.
* Royal -- I'm not buying the Gaffney love in Denver. All the other Denver WRs are out there, but Royal could get some looks IMO.
* Laurent Robinson -- A #1 option, though StL receivers were awful last year.
* Nate Burleson -- depends on how prolific the Detroit passing game is this year.

I'd say your safest bet is probably Derrick Mason, and he's probably the one I'd go for first

If you wanted to go RB, I'd go Chester Taylor.

If Rice is available now, he'll probably still be available in like week 5 or 6 when report of his rehab progress will be out
