I see this signing biting the Tiggers in the ass. The kid is going to have to stick in the majors by the end of the 2011 season (if my math is correct). By signing him this late, they basically wasted a year of development time because he's only got three years left before he needs to stay on the 25 man roster. Not the 40 man roster, like if he would sign a minor league deal. Also, if he sticks in the big leagues at age 21, he's still got 4 more years before he passes through the injury nexus. I just really don't like giving ML contracts to amateurs period, let alone 18 year old kids. Thankfully Hansen is starting to pull his stuff together otherwise that move may have backfired on the Red Sox as well. mahalo

And Craig Hansen was a college relief pitcher who made it to the majors a month after signing and he has struggled until recently. And he basically started at AA. Porcello is probably going to get a start or two before the season is over (maybe), some time in Instructional League, and then could start the season either in XST or if the Tiggers are aggressive he could start in Low A. If Hansen, someone the D-Backs thought about taking #1 overall, has struggled, then it certainly could happen to Porcello. Things are in line for him to make it to the big leagues early and I agree he is better then Kershaw but I just don't like the idea of ML contracts to drafted kids because so many things can go wrong. Unless the kid does not spend an inning in the minors and starts in the major leagues, I don't want him to get a ML deal. Too many things can go wrong to slow development, especially for an 18 year old. For every Josh Beckett there is a Wily Mo Pena who the Yankees foolishly gave a ML deal to at 16. mahalo

Porcello has a lot to prove before I put him in Kershaw's class. Mid 90s lefties with the ability to be overpowering don't grow on trees. And Josh Beckett, for as good as he's been this year, was really quite an underachiever before this season, and he was awful last year.
He got a lot of hype (and rightfully so) for his performance in the 2003 World Series, but didn't take the next step everyone expected after that.

I'd hardly call Beckett an underachiever besides last year. Silly injuries like blisters kept him from pitching more and honestly, it might have been a blessing in disguise because he would have racked up A LOT of innings as a young pitcher if not for those injuries. He seems to have passed through the injury nexus pretty cleanly and when he was healthy, he was extremely effective.
Also, I'm curious as to how this affects his arbitration clock. Say he starts his fourth year of the deal out with the ml club. The Tigers use his three options the previous three years and then he is a rookie that fourth year. Does his time on the 40 man roster affect his service time? Is he eligible for arbitration after his rookie year because he will have been on the 40 man roster for the three years of service time needed to be eligible. I think that it does not count as service time so he's simply get the minimum raises over his $1 million salary until he is eligible for arbitration but I will find out. mahalo
