Draft question for Arizona

Post#1 » by Ex-hippie » Thu Apr 26, 2007 7:06 pm

Everyone and his brother is penciling in the Cards to take Joe Thomas at #5. What's the contingency plan if Thomas isn't there? I can see that happening if TB misses out on Calvin Johnson; they could easily take Thomas. Do you think Levi Brown would be a reach with your pick? (Let's just say, in addition to Thomas, the players who are gone are Johnson, JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn.) Do you go for Adrian Peterson and hope for a two-back success story like New Orleans had? Gaines Adams, maybe?

Or would you think about trading up a notch or two, just to ensure you can get Thomas?

1. Cardinals are not interesting in moving from the 5th pick unless someone offers us an incredible package to move up. (unlikely)

2. Unless someone trades up to get Joe Thomas (unlikely, when was the last time you saw a team trade up for an OT?) he should be there for us.

3. Levi Brown is a reach and will only be considered if we move down to 9 with Miami in hopes that Brady Quinn is available.

4. Tampa just signed Luke Petigout and have another solid young OT in Trueblood. They went Oline in the first last year, and are doubtful to do it again this year. Simeon Rice is aging, if they don't go Gaines Adams, they will go Amobi Okoye.

97 the Rams and Raiders both traded up in hopes to grab Orlando Pace. But he was a much better prospect that Thomas is imo.

The morning guys on XTRA 910, have been saying that its a big possibility that if Adrian Peterson and Thomas are both on the board, that they will take Peterson. Use him in the 2 back set, that alot of teams are starting to use. Wisenhunt has said that he thinks the Cardinals have the talent on the line, to be a great offensive line. He said he thinks, they were managed poorly(which I agree with).

Wisenhunt also brought up the fact, to Mike Jereki, that OL picked in the top usually turn out to be busts. Of course you have the John Ogden and Orlando Pace' of the world. But you also have the Leonard Davis', Tony Mandariches, Robert Gallery's of the world.

You can pick up really solid linemen in later rounds. IMO, the Chargers picked the best linemen of the draft last year, in round 2. So its really a hit or miss thing.

I'm pretty sure Seattle moved up to get Walter Jones that same year as well. Anyway, if we all agree that a lineman is worth the #5 pick, why would teams be any more or less likely to trade up for him than for anyone else who's worth the #5 pick?

Pace, Ogden, Walter Jones, Tony Boselli, Willie Roaf, Chris Samuels, Lincoln Kennedy, Richmond Webb. All top-10 picks, all studs. If you have to pick the best offensive tackle of the last 20 years, I'm pretty sure you're going to go with one of those players. Mandarich and Gallery are busts (and so is Mike Williams), but there are busts at every position.

At left tackle? Other than Marcus McNeil (an early second rounder), how many great ones are taken after the first round? Mark Tuinei, and... anyone else?

You would be shocked, if you look at most of the starting lines across the league, the big majority were not first round picks.

You can probably say that about most positions. But how many dominant left tackles were not first round picks? Not too many.

I like the pick.

Many experts say he'll end up being better than Thomas simply because he is tougher, has a nasty streak, and can be a better run blocker than Thomas will.

Alan Branch was asked who the toughest OT he played against.. and he said it was Brown and not Thomas, because Brown has the stength and ability to lock down on you and not let you do crap. Thomas is more of a back down, and push you back OT. We're looking for a road grader..and that's Brown.
