CINCINNATI -- Carlos Zambrano extended his deadline to reach a contract extension with the Cubs beyond Opening Day, a sign the sides are nearing agreement.

Zambrano and the Cubs are thought to be discussing a five-year deal worth about $80 million. The ace right-hander had previously stated that he did not want to negotiate past Monday's opener against the Reds.

On ESPN they said that the Cubs and Z are close to a 5 year 80-85 million dollar deal.

They said it'd be slightly less than Zito's $17M, but not by much. Big Z was willing to take a little less to stay on board.

Chicago Sun-Times wrote:When he steps on the mound today at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Carlos Zambrano will be the undisputed ace of the Cubs' pitching staff.

In reality, the big right-hander has been the Cubs' ace since 2004, but he didn't get as much attention as Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Greg Maddux or even Matt Clement in that first post-National League Championship Series season.

By the end of this week, Zambrano will be getting the kind of contract reserved for staff aces, something in the five-year, $85 million range. Clement and Maddux have moved on. Wood's days as a starter -- and perhaps as a major-leaguer -- are over. Prior is aiming for the Futures Game as he begins the season at Class AAA Iowa.

Durable 'Z' looks like ace for long haul

''A person one time told me that when you are great, when you are a good player, you don't say that, just let the people decide how good you are,'' Zambrano said over the weekend. ''I don't say that. If the people want to say that I am the ace, that's good, but I still have to play ball and do my job either way.''

Big Z is gooooooood. Big Z has been the "ace" for a few years now.

With the money that we have been spending, we needed to make sure that we still had enough in the bank to lock up Z.

I hope that they saved enough for him....We all know that quality pitching is the key....

After today's outing I would offer him the league minimum and maybe throw in a weekly case of Old Style. Arrgghh, no, I am not serious. Big Z is our ace and the best shot we have had for a Cy Young award in years. Since it isn't my money I hope the Cubs pay him whatever it takes to lock him up long term.

I'm just very disappointed in today's game. I hate, absolutely HATE, to see runs walked in.

Also upset that I passed on Adam Dunn in my fantasy baseball draft. (this feeling will pass, of that I am sure)

Who did you take over Dunn? Man, Z needs to stop walking so many hitters. he scored only 1.5 points for me today!!! He needs to rebound from this start.

I drafted David Wright instead. I'm still happy with the pick, but it almost felt like Adam Dunn was trying to tell me something when he hit two dingers in his first two at-bats with me watching. I just thought it was funny.

Don't worry. Adam Dunn will not be like this all year. You have to remember, he's ADAM DUNN!

Strikeout King.
That what worries me about having him on my fantasy team.
He could be good trade bait right now :)
