Sark did not deserve to stay. We racked up offensive numbers against crappy teams but failed when it counted. But I don't think Quinn deserves to stay. Even under Shanahan there has been general failure to properly manage games and effectively utilize our offensive weapons. Injuries aren't a good excuse for this team to be out of the playoffs before thanksgiving (or sooner really). We are wasting Julio's career.

iF (WHEN) WE DO decide to part ways with Dan Quinn, I hope we lean heavily towards a Offensive Head Coach.

This is embarrassing for a potential future HOF to be subjected to:

Totally agree. I want my head coach to be controlling the game from the offensive side of the ball.

After firing coordinators, Dan Quinn puts pressure on self for 2019

Image

Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn isn't oblivious to the reality in front of him: 2019 is a make-or-break season.

The honeymoon was over a long time ago, after the Falcons blew that 28-3 Super Bowl LI lead in a 34-28 overtime loss to the New England Patriots.

Team owner Arthur Blank yearns for a Lombardi trophy and won't tolerate mediocrity. That's why change was inevitable following the Falcons' 7-9 finish, as Quinn parted ways with offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel and special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong. Quinn put more of the burden on himself by announcing intentions to serve as defensive coordinator, a role he thrived in while coaching for the Seattle Seahawks in 2013 and 2014. Skeptics will wonder if Quinn can succeed with overall game management as a head coach while assuming the defensive playcalling, but he'll have to find a way.

The theme might not be "Super Bowl or bust," but if Quinn can't at least guide the talented Falcons back to the playoffs next season, he could find himself in the same position...an ex-Falcons coach.

As one NFL executive noted on Monday, there will be "no one else to point the finger at" but himself.

"He's fired coordinators, defensive line coaches and moved coaches to other spots," the executive said. "What's your next move? There's not another move to be made. He's put all his chips at the middle of the table."

Actually, the next maneuver Quinn has to make is bringing in an offensive coordinator capable of elevating a high-powered offense featuring Matt Ryan and Julio Jones to the level Sarkisian couldn't take it in two seasons.

Dan Quinn led the Falcons to a Super Bowl in his second season. Two years later, he’s smart enough to understand the realities of the coaching profession — that at this time next season he could be out of a job if things go horribly wrong again.

Quinn has strengths as a head coach but also weaknesses. Here’s one: He struggles at times with game management/clock management decisions. Because he is now taking on the duties of defensive coordinator, expect the Falcons to hire an assistant coach to help him in those areas. Several NFL head coaches call offensive or defensive plays. Some have assistants who help them with clock decisions.

The Rams’ McVay hired Jedd Fisch, a long-time offensive coach in the NFL and college, just for the game management role and gave him a title as “senior offensive assistant.”

Quinn didn’t necessarily need humbling, but he certainly understands the gravity of the situation.

But when a team has losing streaks of three and five games with a remaining level of perceived talent, the issues go deeper than injuries. Leadership, player development, coaching.

The defense ranked 28th in yardage, 27th against the pass, 22nd in sacks and 20th in takeaways — and the Falcons actually were worse than that in the latter two categories most of the season.

The Falcons were expected to compete for a Super Bowl this season. But they never even had a winning record. Change was mandated. Change has come, and Quinn taking over the defense is a good start. But it’s only a start.

Quinn, Dimitroff acknowledge mistakes made on roster, coaching staff

Image

Dan Quinn and Thomas Dimitroff screwed up.

It doesn’t mean Quinn isn’t a good coach (he took an upside down team to the playoffs in two of his first three seasons, including a Super Bowl run), or that Dimitroff isn’t more than competent as a personnel man. But as the co-builders of the Falcons’ organization, both acknowledge there’s ample evidence that their assessment of the depth on the Falcons’ roster was inaccurate.

They believed they hired the right two men as offensive (Steve Sarkisian) and defensive (Marquand Manuel) coordinator after the 2016 Super Bowl season. They were wrong.

If the right coaches are hired, if the right players are brought in to fill the gaps, the Falcons can accomplish next season what they failed to in 2018 —compete for a Super Bowl. If the wrong decisions are made, Quinn and Dimitroff both could be out of jobs.

The realities of this season hit home for Quinn during a five-game losing streak that began in November in Cleveland. The Falcons had steadied themselves with three straight wins to get back to 4-4, then backslid.

There are a number of major personnel decisions the team must make. But the single most important decision will be the naming of a new offensive coordinator.

Dan Quinn will need someone else to with clock management and replays, according to a report.

Kyle Flood, who the Falcons recently named to the new position, will reportedly leave to coach the offensive line at Alabama. Flood served as Atlanta’s assistant offensive line coach last season.

The Crimson Tide have suffered through some turmoil on their staff since losing in the College Football Playoff national championship game to Clemson. Nick Saban re-hired former Falcons offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, who was dismissed by Atlanta Dec. 31.

Power Ranking Every Coaching Staff Heading into the 2019 NFL Season

13. Atlanta Falcons

Image

Head Coach: Dan Quinn (36-28)

Offensive Coordinator: Dirk Koetter

Defensive Coordinator: Dan Quinn

On one hand, in his four years at the helm of the Atlanta Falcons, Dan Quinn's had a fair amount of success. He's won eight more games than he's lost and has made two playoff trips and a Super Bowl appearance.

On the other hand, Quinn's Falcons are coming off the worst season of his tenure (7-9), that Super Bowl appearance ended with the worst collapse in the title-game's history, and he ranked a so-so 13th in 2018, according to Head Coach Rankings.

There are big changes afoot in 2019. The Falcons brought back fired Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter as offensive coordinator—a position he held with Atlanta from 2012 to 2014. And Quinn has taken over as the team's defensive coordinator, harkening back to his days with the Seattle Seahawks.

In addition to Quinn and Koetter, two other members of Atlanta's staff have head coaching experience. Assistant head coach Raheem Morris was head man in Tampa from 2009 to 2011, and tight ends coach Mike Mularkey has run three different NFL teams (Buffalo, Jacksonville and Tennessee).

It's really close, but I'd have to place Mike Smith higher than Dan Quinn in the hierarchy of Falcons Head Coaches. Quinn got us over the hump by winning the NFC Title game. But Smith brought the franchise back from the chaos and calamity of Vick's arrest and Petrino's departure. We were competitive more frequently under M Smith, too. I won't let a single NFC Championship victory be the difference.

Admittedly, it's really close...

NFL coach confidence scale: How should the 32 fan bases feel going into 2019?

Tier 2 -- Feeling pretty, pretty good

These coaches don’t elicit full confidence, but even with some flaws, their fan bases should feel good about their ability to lead a successful franchise.

Dan Quinn | Falcons: Quinn went to Atlanta after a successful stint as the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator. But Atlanta’s defensive efficiency ranks during his tenure have been unimpressive: 22nd, 26th, 22nd and 31st. Quinn got rid of all three coordinators following last year’s disappointing 7-9 campaign. He’s had a successful four-year run, finishing below .500 only once and getting them to the Super Bowl in 2016. But given the firepower on offense, there’s pressure on Quinn to improve the defense and make the Falcons a contender in the NFC in 2019.

It's officially time to start the clock on Dan Quinn's tenure here in ATL.

Unless he makes an unexpected run to the NFC Championship game, I believe this will be his last season as Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
