Falcons K Matt Bryant says he'll be released after missing only one FG last season



A good kicker is hard to find, but the Atlanta Falcons are ready to risk it.

Matt Bryant, who will be 44 next season, said the Falcons told him they plan to release him.

Even though Bryant was 43 last season, he was among the most reliable kickers in the NFL.

Bryant hit 95.2 percent of his field-goal attempts, which was a career-best for a full season. He went 20-of-21. He made 4-of-5 from 50 yards or longer. He also hit 33-of-35 extra-point attempts, which is fine.

There were no obvious signs that Bryant wasn’t as good as ever, though perhaps the Falcons saw some hidden signs of slippage.

That's rough.

The Atlanta Falcons released veteran kicker Matt Bryant on Tuesday and signed Younghoe Koo to their active roster.

Bryant, 44, was the second-oldest player in the NFL behind Adam Vinatieri. He has struggled to find his rhythm through the first seven games of the season, knocking down just nine of his 14 attempts and missing an extra point. Long-distance kicks have been the biggest issue, with Bryant missing four of his six attempts from 50-plus yards.

The Falcons previously released Bryant in February but brought him back in August after Giorgio Tavecchio and Blair Walsh failed to impress during the preseason. He is currently the 13th-most accurate kicker in NFL history.

Not the best way to end his Falcons career. I hope he enjoys retirement as a player unless he decides to venture into coaching. It's been enjoyable watching him have success for us for so many years.
