Dan Quinn running out of time to fix Falcons

Michael Cunningham wrote:Dan Quinn failing as Falcons coach and coordinator

Dan Quinn has two jobs this season. He’s Falcons head coach and defensive coordinator. Quinn has been very good at both jobs in the past. He’s struggling with both in 2019. At Indianapolis Sunday, the Falcons once again weren’t ready from the start. That’s twice in two road games. That’s on the head coach. The Falcons rallied but Quinn’s defense, bad at the beginning, couldn’t stop the Colts on their last two possessions. That’s on the coordinator.

Maybe the Falcons just aren’t very good, which is what I suspected before the season. The Falcons (1-2) have been outscored by an aggregate 41-3 in the first half of their two road games. The Falcons got buried early by Minnesota in Week 1 because of turnovers and a shaky run defense. Against the Colts they were undisciplined and disorganized from the start.

There’s plenty for the Falcons to correct after Sunday. But most of the problems were on Quinn’s side of the ball. His group didn’t look very coordinated in the first half. Quinn twice called timeout because players weren’t properly aligned. Colts receivers found a lot of room in the secondary.

One of the flags was for too many Falcons on the field. Quinn got caught trying to substitute when the Colts didn’t huddle. It was another example of the defensive coordinator letting the head coach down. It also was vice versa. No wonder the Falcons are 1-2.

Schultz: Whether it’s the messaging or the players, Dan Quinn has a problem

But Dan Quinn has a problem. Whatever he is doing, coaching or saying isn’t working.

The Falcons have a talented enough roster to be 3-0 or at least 2-1. Instead, they’re 1-2 and could be 0-3. These perceived talented players are doing dumb and undisciplined things, like committing penalties (a league-high 35 for 274 yards, exceeding the average distance of three scoring drives), blowing basic coverages, failing in basic run defenses and committing turnovers (seven, led by Matt Ryan’s six interceptions).

It’s fair to wonder whether Quinn’s style and messaging just aren’t working anymore, whether the whole “Brotherhood” thing needs to be drop-kicked in favor of something with more flames. Quinn is taking a lot of heat. Quinn doesn’t run from the criticism. He understands the anger and the questions about his messaging.

“The messaging is always important: You know you’re on it when the team lives it,” he said.

Quinn must take fault.
Everyone is disappointed with the start to the season. We must win this week and get something going.

Any loss the division takes we must win. New Orleans will still be good without Drew Bree's.

NFL Coaches Already on the Hot Seat This Season

Dan Quinn, Atlanta Falcons

Image

Over the course of Quinn's tenure, the Falcons have made the playoffs just twice, though they registered two postseason wins during Ryan's MVP campaign that propelled the team to the Super Bowl before the infamous blown lead against New England.

It doesn't seem like Quinn has ever fully recovered, regressing in each season since, including last year's 7-9 record. This year, the Falcons are off to another slow start, sitting at 1-2 after stumbling out of the gates in Minnesota, then fending off an injured Philadelphia Eagles team by four points before losing to the Andrew Luck-less Indianapolis Colts.

Keep in mind this sour start came after an offseason in which Quinn cleaned house, firing offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel and special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong. Atlanta started slow last year, going 1-4 before rebounding to finish 7-9, but a similar resurgence might not be possible this year, with every divisional game left on the slate, as well as matchups against Houston, Seattle and the Los Angeles Rams.

If Quinn's Falcons can't stretch out for nine wins, that would mean only two of his five years in town saw him finish better than .500 despite talents like Ryan and perennial Pro Bowl receiver Julio Jones. The luster of a Super Bowl appearance only goes so far for a head coach.

Is it to soon or too bold to clamor for Jim Harbaugh to coach the Falcons next season?

Dan Quinn’s time as Falcons’ coach is nearing its end

There’s not a lot to be gained by firing an NFL coach after four games. There are offensive and defensive schemes that need to be fitted to this week’s opponent.

Being pragmatic, an NFL owner must ask, “Can someone in-house get more from this team?” Even as we stipulate that it’d be hard to get less, I don’t see such a person working at 4400 Falcon Parkway. As bad as the Falcons have been, the only real course now is, er, to stay the course and hope for the best — even as what we’re seeing is close to the worst. For optimism, that’s all I’ve got. I concede it’s not much.

Through four games, Ryan is second to Patrick Mahomes in yards passing; Mahomes’ team is 4-0, Ryan’s 1-3. And yet: Carolina and New Orleans have won twice as many games this season with their No. 2 quarterbacks as the Falcons have with their No. 1. Other teams figure stuff out. The Falcons … well, they’re not so good at figurin’.[/color]

The stats mightn’t look awful — the Falcons are 10th in the NFL in yards, ninth in yards allowed — but they mislead: Having outscored the Falcons 65-10 in the first halves of the three losses, the opposition hasn’t had to risk much. This club is 19-20 since winning the NFC title on Jan. 22, 2017. It’s 8-12 over the past two seasons. It’s alone in last place in the NFC South

One of the responsibilities of being the Falcons’ head coach is to brief the high-profile owner every Monday as to what just happened. It’s hard to imagine that there’s much to say. Quinn dumped his three coordinators on New Year’s Eve, leaving only one person, at least coaching-wise, left to fire. At the rate this is unraveling, that figures to happen soon. Not this soon, but soon enough.

All you hear from the Falcons is "we're upset" quotes... Actions speak louder than words, boys.

Falcons reach low point with coach Dan Quinn: How did Atlanta get here?

Image

Dan Quinn took charge of the Falcons' defense this season with the intent of helping the team meet high expectations of playoff contention. Atlanta fell to 1-4 with Sunday's 53-32 loss to Houston in which the Texans racked up 592 yards of total offense, so it's hard to believe Quinn is doing a good enough job to keep his job.

With the loss Sunday, the Falcons went from not improving to free-falling. Blank admitted he is not yet ready to make move, but the Falcons play the Cardinals next week; if they can't beat that fellow one-win team before a gauntlet schedule that includes the Rams, Seahawks, Saints and Panthers on the horizon, then all thoughts of a midseason turnaround will fly out the window.

Blank is more patient than most team owners, but the past successes of Quinn's predecessor, Mike Smith, gave the former coach only a short two-year stay after his last playoff team.

Quinn is in the same danger zone with a season that might get worse before it gets better.

The Falcons’ Dan Quinn Era Is Running on Borrowed Time

With a team that’s built to win now heading in the opposite direction, how long can Quinn last?

Image

This weekend’s visit for their matchup against the Texans was the team’s first trip to Houston since its devastating collapse in Super LI. And after Sunday’s embarrassing 53-32 loss to the Texans, the Falcons couldn’t be further away from the championship-caliber team they were during their last trip to Houston. The two and a half years since that heartbreaking Super Bowl loss have seen the franchise slowly descend the league’s ranks, and with the Falcons now sitting at 1-4, it seems like time might be running out on Quinn’s tenure in Atlanta.

No single factor has brought the Falcons to this point. There are plenty of reasons for Atlanta’s struggles since 2016 and its horrible start this season... But while the franchise has searched for answers by shuffling its coaching staff and making bold personnel choices, it’s steadily slipped in the wrong direction.

Spoiler:
Atlanta’s average annual contract value is $223.8 million—the highest total in the NFL. General manager Thomas Dimitroff built this team to contend right now, which makes the 1-4 start all the more disheartening. The Falcons are currently set to spend $133.4 million on their offense in 2020—the most in the NFL by nearly $25 million.

It’s difficult to fathom, considering how close Atlanta was to the mountaintop only a few years ago, but it’s been nothing but disappointment since 28-3. The Falcons are a smart, patient organization that won’t make a rash decision when it comes to Quinn. But it’s starting to feel like change is imminent for a team that’s built to win right now.

So pissed I can't even listen to 680, no fault of theirs, just the Falcons are so bad Dawg and Braves talk isn't enough to divert from them... So I have to settle on setting up music.

Last I looked at the score is was 23-17 Houston... phuckkkk.

When are we going to start blaming Matt Ryan?

I say this, because how much would the internet explode if Rogers, Brees, or Brady magically got Julio right now and for the rest of the year?

I understand that defense wins championships, but with this offense, the Falcons should be averaging +30ppg, even if the defense is giving up 40.

This is very fair question. Matty Ice bears some of the blame here, particularly for untimely interceptions.

But he currently has more passing yards than Rogers or Brady. His QBR is drastically higher than Rogers (and is near identical to Brady's).

Falcons offense is top-3 in passing yards in the NFL.

He needs to do more...undeniably. But he's been pretty productive considering the shoddy offensive line play and underwhelming rushing offense.

We're simply a bad team when it comes to everything except passing offense.

At this rate, with so much speculation about his job security, Blank might be forced to make a change during the bye week. Mike Mularkey and Dirk Kotter each have HC experience.

NFL coaching hot seat rankings: Dan Quinn hanging on for dear life, Freddie Kitchens enters the danger zone

We're more than a quarter way through the season and already a few seats are beginning to warm up

Tier 1: Dead man walking

At this point, it would take a remarkable turnaround for this coach to save his job.

1. Falcons' Dan Quinn

It's partly about the Falcons' 1-4 record, which has them in last place in a division composed of two teams that are starting backup quarterbacks and another team that is starting Jameis Winston. But it's mostly about the Falcons' defense. Quinn got the Falcons' job back in 2015 because of the work he did as the Seahawks' defensive coordinator. Only once has his Falcons defense finished in the top-10 in either points or yards allowed. Last year, the Falcons' defense ranked 28th in yards and 25th in points allowed. This year, they're giving up 30.4 points per game -- only one team has allowed more on a per-game basis. That team is the Dolphins.

"Obviously, the coaching is not where it needs to be," Falcons owner Arthur Blank told ESPN after their most recent loss. "They're challenging themselves, questioning themselves, examining everything they know how to examine. That's all they can do is work really hard at it, take this as seriously as they can, and feel the pain."

Blank also indicated that Quinn isn't in danger of losing his job right now. But the Falcons fired their top assistants in the offseason. So there's no one left to fire except Quinn himself. Assuming the Falcons continue along at their current trajectory, it's unlikely Quinn survives to see the 2020 season in Atlanta. It's becoming increasingly difficult to make the argument he deserves to stay. Despite Blank's recent comments, Quinn might not even get the chance to go down with the ship.

You may find this hard to believe, but the Falcons actually went into halftime of Sunday’s game against the Texans with a 17-16 lead. In the second half, they gave up 37 points (granted, one TD was a pick-six in garbage time) — the most by any team in a game in the last four years. As The Athletic’s Jason Butt wrote, Dan Quinn is badly losing the bet he made on himself to take over the defense this season. The secondary looks completely confused on a weekly basis. In this game, they allowed 592 yards, 8.84 yards per play and 12.9 net yards per pass play — all were the worst marks by any defense in Week 5. The Falcons gave up scores on all five defensive possessions after halftime — four touchdowns and a field goal. They gave up an explosive completion (20 or more yards) on every one of those possessions. The Falcons have a minus-50 point differential on the season. In the NFC, only Washington (minus-78) has been worse.

Return to Atlanta Falcons
