Julio Jones traded: NFL experts grade and debate the deal

Julio Jones has been traded to the Tennessee Titans. The Atlanta Falcons will receive a 2022 second-round pick and a 2023 fourth-rounder in exchange for the superstar wide receiver, while also sending Tennessee a sixth-round pick in 2023.

The Falcons, who have a new coach (Arthur Smith) and general manager (Terry Fontenot) have major salary-cap issues, and the trade will now allow them to sign their rookie class, which includes No. 4 overall pick Kyle Pitts. Jones had requested a trade in March.

The big win for the Falcons is dumping Jones' entire $15 million guaranteed salary in 2021, because this was a cap and cash move above all else. Some teams wanted Atlanta to absorb part of the payout, and that was a non-starter. The Titans waited this out, so they didn't give up a massive haul and can restructure a few contracts to make room for Jones, instantly changing the complexion of the offense in the process. - Jeremy Fowler

It's a trade that was expected to come down -- the question was just what team and what terms -- but it'll still be a jarring one for Falcons fans because Julio Jones is such a franchise icon. More and more, however, star players are not finishing their careers with the teams they are most known for, so this is basically what should have been expected. - Michael Rothstein

I wish Julio the best but I'm excited this is over now. Wish we received more value but I understand.

Arthur Blank comments on Julio Jones trade

“Julio Jones will always be part of the Falcons story, having set numerous records and creating many great memories for all our fans, including me, since the day we drafted him,” Blank said in his statement. “He has been a fixture on our team for almost half the time I have owned the Falcons. As we both move in another direction, I’m deeply grateful for what Julio has done for our team and what he has meant to our city and, in my mind, he will always be part of the Falcons family. I wish him nothing but the best in Tennessee and throughout his life.”

Teams offered players but management made it clear they just want cap space.

I don't like how Julio handled the last several years with us. Time to move forward.

I agree. He kept getting his contract renegotiated despite some nagging injury history. Blank is to nice a guy sometimes...

Deion Sanders

""See, when you trade somebody like Julio Jones, what you're telling me is, 'I know I can't win right now with what I have, so I'm going to trade away some assets that can help me win later.' I don't like that sentiment," Sanders said late last week on NFL Network's NFL Total Access with Steve Weissman and Bucky Brooks. "What did Julio do? Julio's just the face of the team.

"See, that's why I don't have captains here. Guys, I don't have captains here. I don't like that word. Captain is what? How do you trade a captain? How do you trade a guy with a darn 'C' on his chest? How does a quarterback with a 'C' on their darn chest complain and want to be out of the whole organization? I'm tired of that darn 'C.' They need to snatch that darn 'C' off everyone's chest and put an 'L' on — not for losers — and you've got to be a leader."

Julio Jones has missed the Titans' last two practices with an undisclosed injury.

It's believed to be a leg injury, but coach Mike Vrabel isn't divulging any details, only saying the Titans will be cautious with their new star wideout. It doesn't sound too serious. Vrabel indicated we may not see a whole lot of Jones during training camp and the preseason. Injuries have been Jones' downfall in his career. He's currently being drafted as the WR14 in half-PPR drafts.

Julio for the Titans only got 400 yards and 1 TD. Looks like the Falcons sold at the right time.

Tennessee Titans plan to release WR Julio Jones

The Tennessee Titans are planning to release wide receiver Julio Jones, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini on Wednesday.

Jones was signed through the 2024 season. It is likely he will be released with a post-June 1 designation, giving the Titans $9.5 million in salary-cap savings.

The Titans acquired Jones last year along with a 2023 sixth-round draft pick from the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a 2022 second-round pick and a 2023 fourth-round pick. The move was supposed to provide much-needed balance to Tennessee's passing attack.

Jones, however, appeared in just 10 games because of injuries and had career lows with 31 receptions for 434 yards and just one touchdown reception. It was the second straight season Jones was limited by injury. He appeared in just nine games for the Falcons in 2020.

The Falcons drafted Jones sixth overall in 2011, sending multiple picks to Cleveland to be able to take the Alabama standout. Atlanta, when it moved up to acquire Jones, traded its first-round pick in 2011 (No. 26), its second-round pick, two fourth-round picks and its 2012 first-round pick.

Jones, 33, is the Falcons' career leader in catches (848) and yards (12,896) and is second to Roddy White in touchdown receptions (63). His 91.9 receiving yards per game is the best per-game average in NFL history.

Browns, GB, Cowboys, KC, or Rams will most likely pick up Julio, but if it happen, it would be great if the Falcons could get back Julio, espeically after the Ridley debacle!

I personally want nothing to do with Julio. How he handled his last few seasons with us was a debacle in it's self.

With Watson now in Cleveland, Browns might be in the super team building mode and trying to sign aging super stars on the cheap.

I can see Browns and Cowboys going for Julio as both teams are considered contenders and both teams need WR depth.

How desperate should Julio be to win a Super Bowl? A ring tends to mean everything with some players legacy and Julio hasn't had a productive season for a few seasons.

Buffalo may make sense.
