On Monday, Ryan was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a third-round pick. It was the end of an era and sent the Falcons into an unknown future. Two weeks ago, this seemed an unlikely ending. Then the Falcons became one of four teams chasing Watson and everything became public and a little messy and complicated.

Moving on from Ryan signals an Atlanta rebuild as the team adds quarterback to its list of needs and has to search for a replacement, both in the short term and long term. Four straight losing seasons -- the Falcons have not been over .500 at any point since the 2017 season concluded with a playoff bid -- put Atlanta in this position. Something needed to change. The Falcons needed to start to figure out their future. The public push for Deshaun Watson might have just jump-started the timeline.

Remember, Ryan -- the last time he spoke publicly -- talked about how optimistic he was about the organization and how much he wanted to remain a part of it.

"I want to be here and I believe in this team, and our coaching staff, I think, did a great job," Ryan said in January. "I really feel fortunate to have been here as long as I have. I am optimistic, I really am, and I want to be here and I feel good about this group of guys, this coaching staff, everybody, and the direction that it's going. I really think that we're going to make improvements this offseason and continue to grow as a team and be better than we were this year."

Ryan's trade comes less than three months after his very public declaration.

I appreciate everything Matty did for us so I wish him the best. Our ownership and front office must do better and it starts with Arthur Blank.

I expect more from our team. Even more after our Super Bowl debacle. The next couple of seasons are going to be very difficult.

8-)
End of an era.

Beginning of a new era.

If everything goes as planned, Falcons will be pretty good this season and then better next season.

There's many a slip between the cup and the lip. We can only hope that not too many things go
wrong and not too many serious injuries occur.

GO ATL FALCONS!!

:D

Things not going so well for Matty Ice in Indy.

He's been benched for a rookie after yet another terrible performance.

i've been saying this since 2017, it has been Ryan's fault for the Falcons' loses and not the OLine. Colts had the 2nd best ranked OLine going into 2021 and 2022 and now they look like the worst. I'm just proven right again and I'm glad all the talking heads on espn after 5 years finally agree with me and we now know its Ryan's fault and not the OLine's fault.

Matt is just horrible in the pocket, he can't move, he has zero pocket presence, and like what one football analyst said, Ryan just doesn't know how to get out of the way like a Brees or Brady, or Rogers,

Falcons over invested in the OLine because of Ryan, using up multiple 1st and 2nd round picks on OT and OG, when they should have been building there defense.

I do agree.
We invested greatly in our OLine and it handicapped us in other areas. There are many other reasons why we failed too.

Indy has had an elite OLine for the last 4 years. Ryan steps in and makes them look like the worst OLine in the NFL because Ryan has zero pocket presence . One game out and the Colts OLine look elite again.

I've been saying this since 2017, Falcons have a good OLine and its Ryan's fault for the sacks and not the ATL OLine.

I'm sorry, but this is a false narrative that Matt Ryan is the problem with Indy's offense. They've already fired the Offensive Coordinator, they're offense is still in tatters. They have a bad O-Line and a bad team...regardless who lines up at QB.

Code: Select all

The Colts offensive line allowed nine sacks and 12 quarterback hits.

QB Sam Ehlinger didn’t complete his first pass until halfway through the second quarter.

We knew it was going to be a challenge for the offense, but this unit is just flat-out bad. Ehlinger was under duress all game and even when he wasn’t he had missed throws. There’s no rhythm in the passing game and the rushing attack is non-existent even when Jonathan Taylor is healthy.

Fans screamed it for years.

Arthur Blank has been far to loyal to many of his players that's it's a flaw. It's held us back

Matt Ryan is guaranteed $12 million this season thanks to his agent negotiating it for him when Indy traded for him.

You are not factoring in dollars per TD...... Ryan's contract was the reason why the Falcons' defense was last in the NFL for a decade.

What an era it was.
The team could have always done more for Matt Ryan but he made the best out of it and created some special memories for the Falcons Nation.
