Returner Rossum traded to Steelers

The decision to part ways with Rossum comes weeks after he had fallen behind DeAngelo Hall and rookie David Irons on the depth chart at left cornerback. He was not included in nickel coverage packages, where Rossum saw extensive playing time last season.

Rossum, 31, had a career-best 36 tackles last season, when he started a career-high six games at right cornerback after injuries sidelined starter Jason Webster and backup Jimmy Williams.

Rossum's punt-return average dipped to a career-low 8 yards per return in 2006, but he averaged 23.5 yards per kickoff return, the fourth-best mark of his nine-year career.

In parting with Rossum, the Falcons cleared a roster spot that they likely will use to sign a third quarterback after releasing Casey Bramlet on Saturday.

I'll miss Rossum returning kicks, but this means he'll never be in our defensive backfield again so I'm ecstatic. For someone as fast and agile as he is, he has to have the lowest coverage IQ ever.
