Petrino: Harrington holding ball too long as sacks mount

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Sep 18, 2007 5:05 am

Bobby Petrino said it's not fair to blame the offensive line for the high sack totals -- including seven in Sunday's 13-7 loss at Jacksonville.

Petrino said Harrington is holding the ball too long.

"I think right now Joey is playing a little bit conservative, a little bit not to throw the interception," Petrino said. "Therefore it is causing him to hold the ball. He just needs to open it up more with confidence and play to go win the game."

It would also help if the WR's would get open.

Harrington just needs to look off all the reads when he sees the blitz and automatically hit the check down as soon as he recognizes the blitz.

i watched the Colts/Titans game last week and saw Manning use the check down to perfection, when ever the pressure came, he would hit Addai and pick up a positive 3 or 5 yards.... sometimes on 3rd and long, the pressure would come, and he would dump it off to Addai and only pick up 3, Colts wouldn't pick up the first down, but as the announcer in the game said, Manning doesn't throw for the first down, but he does avoid the sack and do something positive and give the team a shot at maybe running for the first down.

I actually agree with Bobby. Joey needs to let it go just a little sooner and a little more often.

But it's not entirely Joey's fault. If the line can't hold anyone then he is having to rush passes and keep th eball if no one is open.
