Carolina will be a different opponent Sunday than the one that defeated the Falcons in Week 3 after DeAngelo Hall's on- and off-field meltdown.
Quarterback Jake Delhomme was injured in that game and lost for the season with an elbow injury. With Vinny Testaverde (Achilles tendon) and David Carr (concussion) banged up, undrafted rookie Matt Moore is the only healthy quarterback. It could force Carolina to sign yet another quarterback this week.
"I think you're going to see two defenses that are playing well," Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said Monday. "They are very talented on defense. Their ends right off the bat, give you concern."
Both teams will try to run the ball and let their backup quarterbacks manage the game.
"I think it's going to come down to both defenses and our offense being able to move the ball and get some points on the board early," Petrino said. "The one thing you don't want to do is play from behind early."
Last season in the second meeting between NFC South rivals, the Panthers playing with backup quarterback Chris Weinke put running back DeAngelo Williams at quarterback and ran a lot of direct snap sweeps.
"I think they ran the ball 55 times if I'm not mistaken," Petrino said. "Our defense will understand that they want to establish the run. Like we will, but I'm not sure you take it a whole much more than that. I don't think they'll run the single wing."
Just before he was drilled to the turf, Harrington found Crumpler over the middle for a 30-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left to give the Atlanta Falcons a 20-13 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
