Honestly, watching the Warriors I just don't get there's any sense of urgency whatsoever. You know, it's possible they don't even make the playoffs. And it's also possible they could finish as a very high seed. It's THAT close. And yet, watching, it feels almost like these are preseason games. Who can ever forget that quote from Steve Kerr? "We're not chasing wins." While it's true we don't know the full details of injured guys not playing, you do wonder what goes into the decision not to play Curry tonight against the Heat. We heard all the tests came back negative and its an issue of soreness. Why did he even travel with the team? To watch from the bench?
And also, there's an issue when guys do play. Jimmy Butler played 29 minutes in a game the Warriors desperately needed. 29 minutes? Granted, he didn't play late, but at half time, he only had 15 minutes. And even now, when Curry is on the floor, a heavy night for him is 36 minutes. It's still typically 32, 34 minutes. And Draymond usually plays a few minutes less than that.
I check other teams fighting for their playoff lives and am amazed how desperate they seem, how many minutes guys OLDER than Curry are playing. Kevin Durant recently played 45 minutes in an over-time game. He typically plays 36-40 minutes every night out on the floor. Even Lebron (who's 40) plays considerably more minutes than Curry, Butler, and Draymond. Sure, I get you don't want to run these guys into the ground. It's a long season. But now the season is short, every game matters. Can't you play the starters more and the bench less? Curry & Butler have actually not played a lot together with the staggering Kerr has devised. I get why he's done that, but if you could figure out the key 5-8 players and play them most of the game, you might get better results. I've noticed even Boston with their deep bench and great record often only play 8 players.
As a fan, you just have to let it go and realize they're content with not being as competitive as other organizations, whatever their reasons.
We all realize the only reason they even made the Butler trade was because they were floundering so badly, right? You know a roster is severely flawed when even Steph Curry isn't enough to make them respectable. There was absolutely another trade (or two) that needed to be made at the deadline -- unless, of course, you're "not chasing wins."
Take it all with a grain of salt. You shouldn't care more than they do. Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone (thank you, John Cougar).
