Houston has made a huge mistake this year. They were positioned as the Spurs were the year Robinson went down. They should have faked a Tmac injury (totally plausible) and just played for Beasley. You get a chance to add a top 3 lotto pick to an already contending team with a a credible excuse to not alienate your fanbase, you do it.

I've never been a fan of tanking with a team that already knows and loves losing, but when a house falls on a good team, there's nothing wrong making a strategic decision to prepare for the next campaign.

Tanking would've been the huge mistake. Houston had 37 wins when Yao went down (about half of that great win streak was with Yao), so they had no chance to tank and get a top 3 pick. Even if they had lost every single game since that injury, they would've been the 11th worst team.

Instead, they shored up their PF situation with Scola and Landry, developed a good bench group for the future in Landry, Hayes, Head, along with some veterans like Jackson and Mutombo.

They'll probably play Utah in the first round, and as good as Utah is, that's really the best possible matchup for Houston out of the top 4 in the west, and it is conceivable that they can knock out Utah in the first round. Utah couldn't stop Tmac last year in the 1st round, and instead of Yao trying to stay with Boozer, they have Hayes, Landry, and Scola to throw at him. And even if they have no chance for the championship, if they get past the first round, its certainly a successful season of having gotten Tmac past that opening round, developing some youngsters, and of course, getting Yao back next year.

We won nearly 50 games and we end up with a lottery pick.

We have a future young core of Ellis, Biedrins, and Wright.

And Don Nelson will be here for (at most) only one more season.

As far as I'm concerned, our future looks good. And it would look even better if we scrap the Baron Davis, Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington trio. Sell high on those players and rebuild entirely around our Ellis, Beans, Wright core.

Pretty much agree....

And whatever happened to just appreciating some damn entertaining hoops! I would totally rather watch the Warriors miss the playoffs than pretty much any team in the NBA not named the Suns, Houston, Lakers...

I think it's entirely justifiable for a reasonable minded fan to have found much of the last month of play from the Warriors to be less than entertaining.

We only won two games against teams with winning records in the last 30 days, the Lakers and Dallas.

March
Wed 12 vs Toronto W 117-106
Thu 13 @ Phoenix L 115-123
Sat 15 vs Memphis W 110-107
Tue 18 @ Sacramento L 105-122
Wed 19 @ LA Clippers W 116-100
Fri 21 vs Houston L 106-109
Sun 23 @ LA Lakers W 115-111
Mon 24 vs LA Lakers L 119-123
Thu 27 vs Portland W 111-95
Sat 29 @ Denver L 112-119
Sun 30 vs Dallas W 114-104
April Opponent Result
Tue 01 @ San Antonio L 92-116
Wed 02 @ Dallas L 86-111
Fri 04 @ Memphis W 117-86
Sun 06 @ New Orleans L 96-108
Tue 08 vs Sacramento W 140-132
Thu 10 vs Denver L 105-114
Sat 12 vs LA Clippers W 122-116

It wasn't entertaining basketball for the last month. It was bad and it doesn't make someone a hater to be unsatisfied with this ending to the season.

before the 16 team playoffs... that means it was with less teams in the league and less games? does that mean those teams finished with like a .700 winning percentage and still didnt get in?

No, it was an 82 game schedual, 17 team league with 4 teams in each conference making the Playoffs in 1971-72.

The NBA has been doing 82 game seasons since the 1967-68 season.
