Fair enough - if given a finished product, Nellie's style may get them a title.
But he can't get a team to that point, and we're not there, so the question diverts right back to - what's the point?
Point to what? Having hired Nellie or keeping him? One more year of Nellie wouldn't be too bad but only if he learned something from this year and plays Andris and Brandon more. He did put Dallas in a position to win a title, Dallas just needed Avery's tweaking and emphasis on defense to get them over the hump.

I have so many problems with all of that...
Nellie's going to learn something, now? He's not changing. He's essentially ignored that Andris has been their key to winning... he completely ignored that we took down the NBA's top team with a traditional lineup... there's no change coming.
And if we're going to give Nellie the credit for putting them in position to win a title, and that they just needed Avery's tweaking... well wasn't Avery being groomed before taking over? Was he not allowed to talk about defense then?
That's all way too convenient... it devil's advocate from every angle.
And the Mavs weren't a title contender... the Heat were going to win that series as soon as Shaq woke up.
You can't have an off night of strength, size and positioning... Mavs nearly pulled off a miracle..
Due to their immediate past/future (to that date) and now present... it wouldnt have been hard to predict at all. The Mavs were a better built variation on the Warriors... they just had stability and role players to boot

Oh come on, you can't be serious with that. Dallas plain and simple choked that series. The proverbial hump was San Antonio. THey should've swept the Heat, at the very worst gone up 3-0.
As for Avery, it wasn't just stressing defense. Once he took over, Dallas made dramatic improvements in defense. First off, they obviously ditched the Twan/Toine experiement, sat Marquis Daniels down, played Howard more, and stopped using Dirk to guard Shaq. Avery had no power to change Nellie's lineups as an assistant.
I'm ok with Nellie for another year if he increases Andris's minutes to about 33-35, which is about 5 more mins a game, and plays Brandon about 20 a game, and lets them develop in meaningful games rather than in a rebuilding/losing environment.
