Why? I think Nelson coached a similar team in Dallas but Avery got them further...at least the first year...
Nelson isn't that great and I actually think our starting 5 is better than almost any starting 5 in the league.... He's done fine ...but he arrived the year after Baron...so you can't say it's all him....
I would take Avery in a heart beat...

Avery should be a college coach - he micromanages the game, rather than letting the skills of his players come through.
Avery did get to the Finals as a coach... but they pretty much tanked when they got there, then tanked again in the first round the next two years. Since Nellie's team whipped Avery and his guys last year, while most everyone agreed that the Mavs had more talent, well that is probably the best indicator of who the better coach is - the head to head.
Has Nellie ever had the favored team and lost to the lower seed in the playoffs? I don't know the answer to that one.
You can put a crappy coach on a great team and win it all, but I don't know if you can give a great coach crappy players and see them win it all. Meaning, number of Championships won alone is not a good indicator of how good a coach is... probably the best indicator would be to see basically the same guys under two different coaches and have one of the teams do a lot better. Say, Larry Brown in Detroit?
My vote is for a coach whose philosophies match the talent the Warriors have acquired over the last few years... a coach who's willing to run. D'Antoni would be good. George Karl might be interesting. Larry Brown, as great a coach as he is, would've been a horrible fit here.

Avery's Exit Interview
Here's what Avery said to the press during a Q & A session regarding his departure from the Mavs:

Notice the last two questions he got and Avery's response to them:
Did you hear from Nellie?
Absolutely.
What did he say?
