Here's an interesting way to look at this:
When they were both in the starting lineups...
Yi: 49 gms 27.2 mins .432 FG% 5.8 rebs 0.6 stls 1.0 blks 9.7 pts
Wright: 6 gms 14.8 mins .600 FG% 4.7 rebs 0.2 stls 1.2 blks 7.2 pts
In a little more than half the minutes as a starter, Brandan was a much more productive player...
FT and 3pt % are where Yi kills Wright, but I would like a big guy who can score inside, get rebounds, and block shots. It's hard to build a contender around a jump shooting 7 ft PF (but kudos to the Mavs for making it work).
If Brandan had gotten consistent minutes, this trade wouldn't even be worth posting.
Another tidbit -- Yi's rookie stats are also very similar to Nowitzki's... what would Yi have to do to become that good?

- be able to create his own shot
- use his height and release point to his advantage
- be able to absorb the slightest bit of contact
- dribbling
- smart passing
- shot selection
- forget that he was an "athlete" in China
- improve his jumper to the point where leaving him open is like a layup
When he starts doing half of that list, then I'll compare him to Dirk. But just because they are both perimeter PFs doesn't mean Yi's anywhere near Dirk is or was. The difference was that Dirk was doing Dirk-like things in Euroball in the U20s, whereas Yi just used his athleticism to get by people in the CBA... One played basketball, the other was just an athlete in a basketball starved country.

I didn't say it was Yi's fault, but I sure as hell don't want to suffer because of his innocence.
I said from the beginning, Yi was a bigger project than Wright... hell, than Splitter... cue every Asian on the draft board/genboard/MIL board to call me every kind of racist and a hater...
He needs a lot of work... its unfathomable how someone that raw gets picked 6th. But it's worked out fine for us so far
