Soccer has yet to catch on here as a spectator sport, but the world's most popular sport holds one of its premier events tomorrow (Sunday) morning: EspaƱa vs. Deutschland (that's Spain vs. Germany for us Yanks) in the Euro 2008 Finals, the quadrennial Super Bowl of national team soccer in Europe.
And there's no best of seven here - it's lose and go home.
This is soccer at its best (only excepting that two of the word's best teams, Argentina (yeah!) and Brazil ("The Beautiful Game") are not playing (for those geographically disinclined, they are in South America ;)). The caliber of play is top-notch. England, with a #9 world ranking and two of the best players in Rooney and Beckham, didn't even qualify!
The games have been really exciting, with plenty of last minute comebacks, upsets, and Cinderella stories.
You should check it out tomorrow!
PS unlike (American) football, soccer is very popular with the ladies as well... head out to North Beach or Mad Dog and you will see plenty of Spanish women (among the world's loveliest (trust me I've been to Sevilla and can vouch ;)) and you can root and have a beer alongside them.
PPS nothing against the German ladies ;)
