Can the W's do this...

Post#1 » by Ben_Dover » Thu Jul 3, 2008 11:37 am

first, before i post my silly question i wanted to make it clear that i'm totally fine and content with the Warriors losing Davis for nothing and not getting Brand either. i'm cool with playing the youth and getting a good pick next year.
however i'd also be super excited to get Brand in replace of Baron. probably my favorite idea to be honest.
still i couldn't help thinking... was it possible for the Warriors to get both of them? not that i'm sure i'd want that, but anyways...

this leads to my question below:

Can the Warriors trade away the last year on Foyle's contract even though he's been bought out?

for example...

Warriors trade to the Sixers:
Foyles dead contract in it's last year ($7M) along with Randolph (2008 lotto pick)

Warriors receive:
future second round pick

then the Warriors would have cleared enough cap space to offer Brand and Davis BOTH contracts that are greater than what the Clippers can offer and basically steal them both away.

------------------------------------------------------

on a side note... if they pulled that off, maybe they could then pull off a trade of Harrington and Belinelli to Sac for Artest and start 2008/09 with:

STARTING 5:
Davis
Ellis
Artest
Brand
Biedrins

6th MAN = SJAX

*and still would have BWright and Hendrix to paly around with for future plans

that team would do damage!

This isn't going to happen and I won't bother with the exact numbers, but if they wanted to try, the trick would be to clear about $10 million in cap-space by trading Harrington (along with some kind of incentive, say Wright or Randolph and future picks or something) to Philly or Memphis for a TPE and maybe a very small contract. Then you would probably need Biedrins to accept the qualifying offer or at the least get Perovic to go to Europe (voiding his contract) and you'd be in the ballpark of having enough cap-space left to give Baron and Brand about what the Clippers are offering.

Best case scenario you'd be left with:
Baron
Ellis/Belinelli
Jackson/Azubuike
Brand/Hendrix
Biedrins

and maybe one or two of Wright/Randolph/Perovic along with a few minimum salary scrubs like Watson, Croshere, etc.
