YOUR 08-09 warriors

Post#1 » by enderboy » Wed Jul 2, 2008 6:57 pm

here are the facts (as i understand them). what are your thoughts for the 08-09 warriors? shop big now? find some stop-gaps & let the kids play more? what are your expectations/goals?

under contract or projected to be:

monta ellis (let's say $9m to start)
marco belinelli, $1.4m
kelenna azubuike (let's say $3m to start)

al harrington, $9.2m
stephen jackson, $7.1m
brandan wright, $2.5m
anthony randolph (14th pick salary = $1.4m)
richard hendrix (probably starting around $600k)

andris biedrins (let's say $9.5m to start)

- 9 guys holding rosters spots
- $ on roster players = about $45m
- $6.5m owed to adonal foyle
- 08-09 projected committed salary = $51.5m
- 08-09 salary cap = $56.7m
- lux tax threshold in 08-09 projected to be around $70m

PLEASE correct any of that if it's off. my understanding of all this is that, if my projections are somewhat accurate, the warriors will initially be around $5m under the cap & around $19m under the lux tax threshold. correct me if i'm wrong, but my understanding is that until the warriors make some kind of signing & get over the cap, there is no mid-level exception available. so, according to the free agent list i found here: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/p ... atsId=3855

these are the free agents i find worthwhile:
(restricted)
c/f ronny turiaf
f josh smith
f ryan gomes
g andre iguodala
g j.r. smith
g sasha vujacic
g daniel gibson

(unrestricted)
c alonzo mourning
c/f kurt thomas
f elton brand
f leon powe
f ed najera
f james jones
g gilbert arenas
g/f corey maggette
g carlos arroyo
g anthony johnson
g quinton ross
g shaun livingston
g anthony carter
g chris duhon
g tyonn lue

retool your warriors.

I still like targeting Iggy with the biggest chunk of money. Choice 1B is Josh Smith. No no no to Arenas or Brand.

Target via trade guys like Crittendon, Moon, Lee, Foye.

Target relatively cheap but potentially good players on shorter, inexpensive deals (either RFA, UFA): Livingston, Ross, Landry, Gomes, Delonte West, Boobie Gibson.

JCritt doesnt do anything to alleviate ball handling duties for Monta. Hes a pure slasher, a damn good one at that.

powe is a UFA?

if he is i say bring him in. i mean hell be an energy player off the bench and he could help out hendrix or even replace him if we need someone reliable.

Critt is a pure slasher. I love it. The point guard expert on point again.

Beautiful bag of poopoo. Couldn't do better myself.

Anyway, stop reading online scouting reports. He's great as a big combo who can handle and spread the floor. Very good fit if gettable, he's got the goods to make a great combo tandem. Get out of your weird point guard box and get with the times!

i dont read scoting reports. ive always tried to watch Tech ever since Travis Best went there.

theres a reason why hes a combo guard, not a point guard. he can handle the ball, so can anthony randolph...doent mean theyre point guards. at tech, he played erratic a lot. he dominates the ball. i didnt watch his entire season, but i saw about 8 games. i dont think he makes good decisions with the ball. he can create shots for others, but prefers to create shots for himself. he had Thad Young, and it seemed he shot the ball more than Young. Young was clearly the better offensive player on the team.

I don't think you've got it on Critt in the NBA here. At all. Talking about why you watched Georgia Tech doesn't help because he was PHENOMENAL as a college point guard. Makes me think you never watched him at all. Crittenton with Nelson would be beautiful.

And Young shot more than Crittenton by just a hair but scored the same points. I love Thad Young, too, and I agree that he's going to be a better NBA scorer. But Critt can play NBA point, especially from a team ballshare dual lead/combo role like he'd run next to Ellis, and he's a fine offensive player.

As a backup to Ellis? You're crazy if that doesn't do it for you!!!

im just saying, i didnt think his decisions with the ball were good. yeah, those were growing pains. but from what i saw, he was an undersized 2 guard.

Just a pt of clarification. GS is much more under the cap than 5 million. Biedrens has a cap hold of around 9mil. Monta and Buke about a million. That is why the are offerring max deals to Arenas and Brands. They are about 18 mil under the cap with renouncing Buke, Barnes,O Bryant. Pietrus.

If Brands or Arenas can't be signed. I would frontload the contracts of Monta and Biens.

I could see us picking up J.R. Smith for chucking purposes.

I wouldn't mind Quinton Ross. His D has always impressed me.

1. target josh smith. 5/$65-70m (starting @ $11-12m)
2. target corey maggette. 4/$30m (starting @ $6m)
3. sign shaun livingston. 2/$5m (starting @ $2m) OR renounce azu & sign arroyo to 3/$12m (starting @ $3m)
4. trade al for a point guard and/or a veteran center

ab/?
smith/wright/hendrix
maggette/jack/randolph/barnes?
ellis/beli
arroyo or livingston/?

arroyo is a good gapstop point guard. he can start or back up ellis & get significant minutes. he's a true point that can lead an uptempo game. he's tough & has some attitude & i like that. maggette is an efficient scorer as a swing player. he changes the personality of the team, but doesn't slow us down & gives us a guy that will hammer his way to the line for an average of 10ft/gm @ 80+%. smith is a beast capable of double-doubles & will take pressure off ab to protect the lane. jack goes 6th man role & nellie can use him where ever he needs to. he'll anchor/steady the bench with the kids on the floor. the main "big man" rotation will be ab/smith/wright. there's 96 minutes available at the 4 & 5. that gives the 3 "bigs" solid pt (guessing that smith would be around 35-38mpg, leaving ab & bw to split the rest on most nights).

the team is still fast, still explosive (maybe even moreso), more aggressive to the basket, can't be any worse defensively, should be better on the boards, and still stays young. the contracts are close enough to fair & the talent is still very strong. the depth isn't so great, but jack to the bench still gives him significant minutes & none of the starters should be over worked because for any given period of time, monta, mags, smith, or jack can be counted on for offensive production. i think nellie would love this group because of the skill level, versatility, and that they've got some experience. they're tough, no-nonsense guys that fit the style.

i'd be very happy with this kind of team.

If you want to rebuild, do it the right way.
Assuming the Clips find a way to sign both Brand and Davis:

GSW out: Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson
GSW in: Andrea Bargnani, Anthony Parker, Jorge Garbajosa, Jamario Moon

TOR out: Andrea Bargnani, Anthony Parker, Jorge Garbajosa, Jamario Moon
TOR in: Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson

Jamario Moon $711,517 (exp)
Andrea Bargnani $5,176,440
Anthony Parker $4,550,000 (exp)
Jorge Garbajosa $4,350,000 (exp)
Adonal Foyle * $6,900,000 (exp)
Brandan Wright $2,497,320
Kosta Perovic $1,944,000
Marco Belinelli $1,446,720
--------------------------------------------------------
$27,575,997
--------------------------------------------------------
#14 $1,424,400
Hendrix $250,000
--------------------------------------------------------
$29,250,397
--------------------------------------------------------
Andris Biedrins $8,000,000 (Kaman money)
Monta Ellis $8,500,000 (Martin money)
--------------------------------------------------------
$45,750,397

Roster 2008/09 Part 1

Ellis/???
Parker/Bellinelli
Moon/Randolph
Bargnani/Wright/Hendrix
Biedrins/Garbajosa/Perovic

with more than $10.000.000 left to spent and additional $15,800,000 coming off the books after the season.
I say we invest the leftover $10,000,000 in unwanted players to collect #1 picks Seattle style. Facilitating some mulitteam trades and getting paid with picks.

After one year of sucking, we should have something like our own top5 pick, one or two additional #1 and enough cap-room to throw big bucks at whoever we like.
At the same time, C and PG are locked up longterm, a former No1 pick is playing for his big contract, Wright&Randolph&Moon&Belli&Hendrix should be improving and be good enough to be at least good role players in the playoffs. Add a superstar via free agency, sign an experienced coach and hope for the best.

Exactly. He was and is a SG with SOME combo G point skills but not near enough to start. Belli's about as viable as a PG,Watson maybe too. I saw Va Tech G's Zabian Dowdell and Jamon Gordon just shred Critt. I was all for us getting Dowdell or Gordon and noted Critt as under-rated. Note...he failed to even get minutes against Smush Parker and D Fish.

As a SG....Azubuike is better overall,by plenty, though Crit has the edge on ballhandling.
CENSORED... No comment.

I wasn't aware that Best went to Tech. When I was in college, he played for my team--The Longhorns.
