Some insider offseason news

Post#1 » by Adonalmao » Thu Jul 3, 2008 11:17 pm

It's been a long time since I've posted on here, but after hearing a few things from someone who knows an associate of the Warriors, I thought I'd share with you guys what I have learned. Perhaps these things have already been discussed before on the board--maybe it's all old news--but nonetheless, here it is. Basically, someone in my family knows someone who catered a party for one of those investor guys who owns a part of the Warriors. At the party this caterer learned the following things:

- The young guys. Belinelli and Wright have each stayed at the Warriors practice facility all summer to work out and eat according to a regimen which, for Brandon Wright, has allowed him to gain 20 pounds. 6'9 / 225 sounds a lot better than 6'9 / 205. Good to hear. Also glad to hear that Belinelli is taking his increased role next year seriously.

- Ticket prices. The part owner claimed that the tickets you and I buy are only provide enough money to pay for the Arena itself and its facilities. He also stressed the importance that the Warriors are placing on getting a star player, as they need the revenue from TV viewing to cover their costs. So don't expect ticket prices to go down any time soon.

That's most of the info I got. Hope to see improvements in the younguns thanks to their diligence this summer.

It looks like they're really trying and it's good news to hear about Brandan. He's going to be real important to this team next year. Thanks for the news.

That part scares the crap out of me. What these guys consider a "star" player is not what I consider a star player. After the real stars get re-signed by their own teams (because that's what happens in this league) all that will be left is the second tier paper tigers. Get ready for the Vince Carter experience at the Oracle.

Ticket prices are not set by costs. Ticket prices are set by market demand. Note that this does not mean sellouts. If you can sell 14,000 tix at $100, that's better than 20,000 tix at $50.

Ticket prices *will* go down if people start staying away at the higher prices. But I don't expect that to happen.

An illustration of prices corresponding to demand, and not costs, is going on in real life right now with fishing. Fuel costs have driven up costs for fishing boats. But the fish are sold at auction, and customers are not paying more just because the fishermen are losing money on fuel. The value of fish is set by consumer demand, and consumers will eat more chicken, beef, etc, instead of paying twice as much for fish.

Costs obviously are not the only factor in their decision to raise prices; demand does play an important factor. If we're going on strict economic terms here, as it seems you want to do, we can assume that the demand for warriors tickets is quite inelastic, as the sharp increase in price in the recent years has not yielded a correspondingly sharp decrease in demand for warriors tickets. Last I checked, the Warriors were top in attendance despite hiking prices. The warriors will continue to raise prices until this demand is choked off. Until then, their main concern seems to be getting a star player to increase this demand, justifying this price increase. All I was saying was that current ticket prices, despite being abnormally high, only barely cover their fixed costs. Interesting point, although it's probably rather moot.

You can read about Busty's rumored offseason work on the Warriors' own blog. Nuff said.

Yeah, the part about ticket prices just covering costs seems pretty hokey. They cranked up ticket prices dramatically this year. Which would suggest either the arena somehow became drastically more expensive for them to operate this year, or they operated the arena at a loss last year. I find those choices hard, and difficult, and hard to believe... Not that I blame them for raising ticket prices. If they can get the money, they are doing the right thing. I have the choice not to renew my tickets. I'm shooting for a middle ground where I move back into less expensive seats this year, but I'd say there are decent odds we end up staying in our same seats for one more season.
