I feel like the injury was much worse than they let on but didn't want to advertise it because they were shopping him

They said they’re aiming for sometime during the homestand. He was dealing with some swelling while ramping up.

Re: Kuminga out another 3 weeks
It will be interesting to see how Kuminga does on his return. He is coming back to a very different team than he left, and there are reasons to be concerned about how well he will fit in, which will depend a lot on how he (and the coaching staff) see his role.
Its worth considering some players who have benefited most from the Butler trade. Among the young players its obviously Podz and Moody, both players who know how to play and process the game quickly. For Moody its more evident on the defensive end than on offense; he doesn't have great lateral quickness, but his length, strength, and game sense let him really shine in a switchable defensive lineup where missed rotations are rare. Of the older second-line players its Payton-- having Butler as an additional excellent passer and game manager and necessary focus for the opposing defense has really opened up lanes for him to cut, and he thrives in the improved defense as well.
There's lots of talk about how Kuminga should be trying to emulate Butler-- a bit more deliberate pace of driving in the lane, using his strength to draw fouls, etc. Butler is kind of a unicorn in this regard, though. Butler's superior feel for the game lets him find passing seams even when the lane is cluttered. His particular kind of strength-- including I think very strong hands-- lets him move deliberately in a lane crowded with defenders while seldom getting stripped-- its really hard to get the ball away from him without fouling. I don't see much of this in Kuminga.
The player who I think Kuminga should be watching in the new order of things is Payton. On this squad, at least, I think his best role (on offense) is a very rich man's Payton, taking advantage of all the new cutting opportunities, making good safe passes when the defense rotates, taking only threes so open they must be taken, driving only when the gravity of Steph/Butler really unbalances the floor for the defenders. Add 60% of Payton's defensive effort and savvy and you have a really good player-- maybe not what Kuminga sees himself to be, but a significant contributor to a contending-level team.

At this rate it sounds like he's headed for surgery.

I don't get why they're saying so little about this. If there's swelling or the scans don't look right or whatever, tell us

They’ve literally reported that he’s had swelling at some point during the road trip.

Could we have him get some run in with the G League team to get his legs under him before bringing him back?

Maybe it's allowed, but it wouldn't surprise me if JK's agent nixed the idea.

Re: Kuminga out another 3 weeks
Well sure, we're all "hopeful", but that tells us nothing. I mean as long as they keep winning without Kuminga and Podz, it's fine, but it would be nice to get them back in the mix and keep the minutes down for some other guys. Still a long way to go and they're going to need some rest soon, especially Steph, Draymond, and Butler. If someone can shave 2-4 minutes a game off their load without the team falling apart, that's going to matter later.

Curry did rehab in SC, if Kuminga whines then communication is bad.

Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga – out since Jan. 4 with a sprained ankle – plans to return to the lineup on Thursday against the Sacramento Kings, sources tell ESPN. Kuminga averaged 20.5 points in his last 14 games played, and now reintegrates to a surging team.
