I would guess that for most of his life he's been bigger and athletically better than basically everyone he played against until the NBA and his tendencies are that he can just beat whoever, but he can't just do that in the NBA. It is hard to change that mentality and what you're talking about with Butler or Giannis, that takes a great amount of work and time to retrain your tendencies. If he takes a leap, I doubt it happens in the next couple of years. Right now, from what I'm seeing, he's still a project 4 years into his NBA career and Golden State has to figure out if they're willing to pay him and hope he makes that leap fairly soon (which could happen).
I am exceedingly optimistic and have no doubt they should pay him. He's already made massive improvements with the ball in his hands this season in regards to pacing and staying in control. But development is always an uneven process. Regardless, the impact Jimmy is making on Kuminga's game is obvious.
So the idea he should be traded just so he can breakout next year or at most the year after? Madness and stupidity.
Do you think he's going to be a ~60% TS% player next year? I don't and that's what you need from a high-volume player if you want to win. Maybe it's worth it to pay him and hope he's ready by the time the max contracts are done in 2 more years.
So for the hell of it I tried to figure out how many SF/PFS in the league have a TS% of 58 >= who also score >= 15ppg.
Disclaimer, I didn't check that this is the truth. I've had AI lie to me on several occasions.
But.
Giannis Antetokounmpo PF Milwaukee Bucks 31.4 60.0
Anthony Davis PF Los Angeles Lakers 25.7 60.2
Jayson Tatum SF Boston Celtics 27.8 59.2
Kevin Durant SF Phoenix Suns 26.4 60.1
LeBron James SF Los Angeles Lakers 25.0 58.9
Brandon Ingram SF New Orleans Pelicans 20.8 58.1
Paul George SF Los Angeles Clippers 20.5 58.4
Jimmy Butler SF Miami Heat 20.2 58.0
Franz Wagner SF Orlando Magic 24.3 58.5
Jaylen Brown SF Boston Celtics 22.8 58.6
DeMar DeRozan SF Sacramento Kings 22.2 58.3
Lauri Markkanen PF Utah Jazz 20.0 58.2
Tobias Harris PF Philadelphia 76ers 15.0 58.0
It's a pretty short list. I suspect that the kind of contact-seeking athletic SF/PF JK is scoring that efficiently is actually unusual. While JK is a PF of sorts he's really not like Giannis and Davis at all.
I think we might to accept a slightly lower efficiency than that.
For the record I quite like him and really hope we get a chance to see if he could take a leap.
****. I just nnotcied that ChatGPT lied to me about something here so I really have no idea if this is true or not
