How would that help?

I'm not sure what all the deadline dates, etc. are, but in principle it gives the front office the flexibility to wait and see whether they want to keep this salary slot alive, by accepting the option and trading Iguodala for an impact player when Klay is back. They could also get to the option deadline, decide that they don't see or foresee any worthwhile trades, and then just let it go (and save a bajillion $$$). If Oubre makes it past the deadline, then he's likely gone in the offseason and GS is out a roughly $15M salary slot.

The flaw in that plan is that no one in the world is trading an impact player for Iguodala. Or just about any player. If Iguodala is in the league next year it will be as an asst coach or in the (Warrior, possibly) FO.

He would be purely expiring salary in that situation. The Grizz didn't want him either; they wanted GS's 2024 1st round pick. The trade would be Iguodala + assets for a useful player (on a team that would value GS's assets more than their player, for instance if they're rebuilding and the player is a veteran who is wanted by teams trying to win now). Think the Marcus Morris trade from NYK to the Clippers last season.

My guess is that Iguodala would not even play for the team he would be traded to. He'd be cut a la what the Pistons did to Dedmon when they received him this past offseason.

Heat might buy out Iggy this season.

Though they're still playing him 20 minutes a game, not too much DNPs.

Iggy did GSW a favor. Got a lot of money knowing he is almost done with Miami. Very smart.

They could, but it would be cheaper to send him to us for Oubre (if we’re willing) and just waive Oubre if they don’t want him, though I’m sure they’d give Oubre some run to see if he looks good with them.

Why would we just give Oubre away like that? And again, Oubre might be my least favorite player on this roster. Him or Wanamaker.

Melo and amare should thrive in this offense. If Jeremy Tyler and cole Aldridge looked that good in summer league then us knick fans have a lot to be excited about. Make room for all the bandwagoners when we take off

For the reason I was saying prior the post you quoted: To keep Oubre’s salary slot alive for next year when we’re trying to contend. If we keep him past the deadline and he walks, which is likely, we lose a spot that could be occupied by a Josh Richardson-calibre guy and instead have to hope that minimums and the taxpayer MLE will be enough with Klay, an improved Wiseman, and our MIN-pick rookie to contend. Maybe it is, but it’s a wiser to give yourself another way to bring in a higher-level player, if it seems like it’s needed.

Waiving him would be a slap in the face to Steph though. We don't care if you're in your prime, lets just throw the season into the trash.

I really like Oubre, I just wish he had a higher basketball IQ and instincts.

For sure. Not back tracking on my loathing at all.

But he had 4 assists and he’s put together a couple of decent games. But more importantly has passed and moved the ball a bit better.

Up the trade value is where I’m at lol

I would think the Warriors would be really eyeing moving Oubre, regardless of how well he plays they can have someone useful next year. I wouldn’t gamble on him signing back, and I wouldn’t gamble on us finding a good rotation guy in free agency. I think you have to go with the sure fire additional year salary cap filler.

Which reminds me, do you think the Warriors use the DPE? It’s almost become forgotten at this point. I think winning a playoff series would be helpful in the offseason to attract guys on minimums.

They have until April 19 to use it, but I'd be kind of surprised if they did. In fact, DPEs are rarely exercised by anyone, probably because of the restrictions on them.

They can't sign anyone in free agency right?

Except their own guys?

So to be able to have a $15-20 million player, they either have to re-sign KO or trade him for someone whose contract runs beyond this year or re-sign that player?

Yeah if they replace KO's roster spot next year with another minimum or MLE player and hope that just getting Klay back is enough to make them contenders, they're dreaming. I know the money is crazy, the luxury taxes they'd have to pay.

But assuming they can have fans in the stands again and non NBA events at Chase, maybe Lacob would feel better about spending.

Imo......Warriors have several decisions to make that would probably coincide with buyouts, the DPE, and deadline deals.

1.) Mulder is scheduled to be guaranteed on Feb 27 I believe. And then you have to think about Toscanos two way status.

2.) Buyouts - I think this is where the Warriors will look to add a player for sure.

3.) Trade Oubre and one or two others to create roster space. And hopefully a controllable asset or two.

4.) use the DPE. I think the only way tuey use the DPE is with buyouts or for a guy that makes sense this year and possibly someone you’d be interested in trying to bring back the following. It ha to make some sense for after this year even though the player you’d get would have to be on an expiring deal.

I think the Mulder and JTA situations will be reversed, assuming Mulder would not be claimed and then agree to 2 way.

JTA will get a roster spot and Mulder to 2 way?

Doubt that Martha. Not that Mulder is a world beater, but he’d be claimed. He’s a legit long range shooter. And when he plays with Steph it really opens things up.

You might be right, but I think he’d be claimed. And I’m not sure you can sign him to a two way after the fact. That’s be somewhat skirting the rules. But I could be wrong on that.

In my uninformed opinion:

1) Mulder will be guaranteed. They can convert JTA to a min salary contract up to the last day of the season which would make him eligible for the playoffs. So it depends on the playoff situation. They would have to cut someone.

2) They'll look to sign a buyout, but only if it's someone who can help with a playoff push. If so, Chriss will be cut.

3) Oubre won't be traded, mainly because no one will give any value for him. He trashed his value the first few months of the season. Plus, he can still be valuable to the Warriors.

4) They won't use the DPE, too many moving parts. If they land a buyout, it will be on a min salary so they won't need to use the DPE.

Did they ever apply for or get a DPE for Chriss as well? AFAIK there’s no penalty for applying.

Would only be worth half his minimum salary, so no.
