I'm not sure what all the deadline dates, etc. are, but in principle it gives the front office the flexibility to wait and see whether they want to keep this salary slot alive, by accepting the option and trading Iguodala for an impact player when Klay is back. They could also get to the option deadline, decide that they don't see or foresee any worthwhile trades, and then just let it go (and save a bajillion $$$). If Oubre makes it past the deadline, then he's likely gone in the offseason and GS is out a roughly $15M salary slot.
The flaw in that plan is that no one in the world is trading an impact player for Iguodala. Or just about any player. If Iguodala is in the league next year it will be as an asst coach or in the (Warrior, possibly) FO.
