he played the team game.
Your assertion that Reggie was "never an offensive superstar" sort of begs the question of what is an offensive superstar?
I always get the sense that some posters believe a player has to have the skillset of a Harden or Curry to be an offensive superstar, i.e., the ability to face up the defender at the three point line, and either break him down for a step back 3, or drive past him for a lay up, dish or trip to the line.
While those types of players are more easily recognizable as offensive superstars (given the traditional focus on iso ball), it ignores in my mind the players who excel offensively without the ball in their hands. Nowitzki, Reggie Miller, Rip Hamilton, the list can go on covering every generation of the NBA. These guys move great without the ball, using screens, etc. (and not necessarily their handles) to get open and are nails in knocking down shots. In my mind they are every bit the offensive "superstar" and in some ways, they are even greater because they facilitate ball movement on offense rather than allowing the offense to stagnate into iso plays. Recently, Kerr even noted the importance of Klay's role in our offense, as his constant movement often causes multiple defenders to lose their assignments on switches and clears lanes for Curry to drive.
Back to our regular programming...the answer to the question posed by the OP all depends on how you rate Klay. IMO, if you rate him fairly, he is not overrated, hyperbole in this thread notwithstanding. He is probably the top shooter in the league not named Curry. Is he Reggie great? Probably not yet, but in this era he is great. He has the athleticism and stamina to play great defense on the perimeter and willingly takes on the toughest perimeter assignment, while still being able to be in constant motion on offense and able to knock down shots when given the opportunity. In a game where the objective is to score more than your opponent, someone who contributes as much as Klay does to advancing our offense while strengthening our defense is rare. Most other teams have to decide whether to rotate in an offensive or defensive player throughout the game, but with Klay, it's plug and play.
He really is the ideal SG for this team. I for one am very happy he is a W. Wouldn't trade him for anyone at the SG. Now if we got Durant....
