Should the Warriors make a trade?

Poll ended at Mon Dec 2, 2024 11:11 pm

Yes - a major shakeup (Let's be real, Steph and Dray are untouchable, so) let's define this as a trade involving one or more of the 2nd tier guys, players like Wiggins, Kuminga, Podz, and/or a first round pick or picks.

Yes - a minor move/moves. Something like De'Anthony Melton's expiring contract and a minor piece or pieces?

No - this team is very good. Stay pat. Don't want to risk a good thing.

Good thing the Dubs have so many second round picks to offer...Oh, wait, they don't have any. Never mind.

They have a second round pick this season, just not their own.

I like that they use the term "funk" to describe going 10-20 over the last 30 games. Makes it sound like it's just a small recent unfortunate hiccup before they start winning.

Vooch is the ultimate desperation move... the fact we're even linked to him so strongly should tell you everything we need to know about this FO

People seem to forget the very first thing this FO did was greenlight paying David Lee $80m

Jumping Joe trick y'all man

Anyone know that exact specifics there?

He can be aggregated with other players, but not until day before the deadline. Previously, that wouldn’t be the case, but they changed the rule when they moved the deadline date. It’s why they made sure to make the Schroder deal the day Melton became trade eligible

Exactly. He had to be traded by Dec 16 for that rule to apply. Anyone traded after that date can't be aggregated this season.

Thank you both and HiRez for the clarity. Now I can go have some fun with the trade machine having an extra 13m to play with 8-)

I would trade Kuminga and expiring contracts (e.g., Hield, Schroeder, Looney, GPII, Waters) for Jimmy Butler. I would not trade an important role player (e.g., Wiggins), aside from Kuminga, in the deal.

It may not help win this season, and Jimmy may be gone soon, but it least it doesn't sacrifice the rebuild (which is probably overdue) because I don't think Kuminga on a big contract is part of the Warriors future.

With a $49 mil contract that's a lot of expirings though!

Now De'Aaron Fox, at 27 years old, is a guy I might part with some future assets for.

Have to be careful you don't create a situation where you have to send assets out for someone to take Kuminga's contract.

Could probably trade for another second or two.

Wonder what Miami asking for Butler now? Hopefully nothing more than Wiggs and fillers, like Sch, sloMo, PG2... and no 1st.

Miami has a strong incentive to get him off the team.

Otherwise, he will opt into $51 million or something like that for next season.

Slater mentioned that a protected version of the 2025 pick could get made available. But doubts it would be included for someone like vuc.

Probably the same as the one that went out for Poole. 1 year to convey or it becomes seconds. That way, it doesn’t hamper the trades of future firsts for years like that Igudola pick did

They might be asking for more, but I doubt they're getting it. Who is going to give up picks for Butler right now? As mentioned above, they kind of have to move him at this point, they lost all the leverage. They definitely don't want him opting in.

A month later, I still think the one trade I want most that may be doable is going after NAW since Minny can't pay him unless they shed a ton of contracts in the offseason.

NAW and Zeller to Warriors
Trayce and Lindy to Wolves
GP2 to Hawks

Steph / Dennis
NAW / Podz
Wiggins / Buddy / Santos
Kuminga / Moody / Kyle
Dray / Loon / Post / Zeller

Why for Wolves: almost certainly going to lose NAW in free agency unless they find a way to shed Randle or other contracts. This at least gets them rookie contract in Trayce at a position they don't have (big man depth). Lindy can be a poor man NAW for remainder of this year. Not many teams have a contract Trayce size that could be available and is a good enough player the Wolves might want.

Why for Dubs: Trayce was a great pick, but Dray/Loon/Post/Kyle/Zeller is more than enough equal or better options at the center spot. We really need a defensive guard next to Steph (why Melton was perfect). And like Melton, NAW can shoot it and play-make a little too. I think he could become an x-factor in Warriors being a fringe play-in team to being a fringe top 6 team. Can still have lots of minutes for Buddy, Moody, Podz based on matchups and going small.

Why for Hawks: they got stuck with Zeller for multiple years because of essentially a clerical error by them. We send them GP2 who can actually help them on the court and is expiring, and they get rid of the future seasons of Zeller's small contract on their books. Dubs only do this because we need to shed a couple million to make the NAW part of this deal work and sign Post.

It's too bad the Warriors didn't draft Toumani Camara. He'd be great for us.

He's been such a great find for Portland.

I know the Warriors were trying to get a pick at that spot or earlier (for Trayce) and couldn't find a trade partner until the Wizards at 57, so probably not even a scenario where he was an option (without giving up more than Warriors were planning to give up).

To be honest, Gui has fairly comparable impact potential to Camara. They play same position/role and Gui is a couple years younger still.
