I like it but what’s in it for Houston?
Oladipo is on an expiring and he’s going to look elsewhere in the offseason. Assuming they don’t suddenly turn it on and become a great team he’s going to be shopped for draft picks, just depends on who is sending the best picks. But considering the franchises desire to lower its luxury tax taking on Oubre who is also an expiring is appealing.
While we may get outbid on the number of picks we also have the ability to free them of 13-14 million, other teams may not offer that amount in expiring contracts.
Most teams probably don’t want to give up talented players on multi year deals plus picks for half a season of Oladipo on an expiring. But we have Klay coming back next year and Oubre is the guy going out the door anyways on an expiring.
Id like to see us get Oladipo but wouldnt want to give up much at all to get him - since i dont see us contending for a title - and dont want to resign him to a max contract when we may be able to compete next season.
Im pretty sure we’d get outbid by a contender who may be willing to give up a late first and/or a young player on the fringe of their rotation.
For us, Im thinking Oubre + Poole + Smiley and then a few 2nds plus cash. Houston should get better offers but dont think I’d give up more.
Saves Houston some money, puts a few 2nds in their pocket, and some cash in their owners pocket.
I would love that trade, I don’t think Poole is going to bring much and who knows what’s going on with Smiley.
I assumed we would get outbid but most teams won’t be in playoff position so offering picks is pointless. It’s also really tough for an annual playoff team to make the trade work financially. Most good teams are top heavy salary wise and have similar caliber or better players on longer deals.
The only trades that worked for Oladipo that made sense were:
Dallas Trades: James Johnson and WCS + picks for Oladipo. But it really doesn’t make sense since they have Luka, THJ, and Richardson occupying the guard spots. Plus Dallas would be sacrificing it’s size.
Denver Trades: Gary Harris + picks for Oladipo. Makes sense for Denver if they want to improve the chance they win the West, although they may not want to lose Gary Harris on a rental. For Houston I am not sure they want to take on a big longer contract for picks.
Miami: Iguodola + Avery Bradley + picks for Oladipo.
This one probably makes the most sense since Iggy and Bradley are both team option contracts. Oladipo also wants to join the Heat. Guess it depends on if Riley is willing to make a move or wait till the offseason.
I think it will be like the Drummond situation where it doesn’t take much to get him because of the circumstance and high price of the contract. I don’t mind sacrificing 2nd rounders to give this team a punchers chance, the further we go the better chance we have with vets in free agency next year. I assume we are already bringing over Jessup which in a way is like adding a pick to the team next year.
